I never thought his dog faced parents were funny when I was a kid and he ain't too funny either.

Chevy Chase is a bumbling egomaniacal asshole in real life. He had the capability of spinning that into comedy in his early years. If he tried to play a character that wasn't in his wheelhouse, it was a humorless flop.

Bill Murray has better range as an actor than Chevy, but his best characters were also bumbling egomanical assholes.

Steve Martin's best characters were also bumbling - including his stand-up - but was lighter on the egomanical asshole. I give Martin more credit on the "humor", though, because he did have a successful run as a stand-up comic and "The Jerk" is one of the greatest comedies of all time which he also co-wrote.

for as much of an asshole as chevy chase probably is, dan harmon always spoke highly of him when it came to the people. i.e. told a story about a security guard or someone saying their sister was a huge fan. chevy had them call her and talked to them for a while.
 
One last thing needs to be said about comedic actors...

Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Steve Martin, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller... ...They're all miles ahead of Billy Crystal!

Billy Crystal has the personality of a carrot and the charm of a potato... What the hell has he ever done that was funny to anyone? If it ever happened once, I missed it.

His Dad was great as Frank Costanza but as Arthur on King of Queens I wanted to shoot him, bury his body and then burn the grass over top of his grave a year later
