Jacksonville Closed-Door Meeting RE: Urban

Hey @JuiceTheGator remember how insanely angry @ralphiewvu got when I said Urban Meyer wasn't respected in Gainesville? This is "different" right?

It always comes back to the same simple reason for the upheaval which follows the guy: he's mentally unstable and a fuckin' weirdo.

It was probably about 2 days into the job when people started asking "wtf is wrong with that guy." But being a good game corch covers a lot of sins, for awhile.

It was a dumb hire to begin with. Urbs should have stayed in the booth collecting checks.
So Urbs made a big mistake and would have been much better off without the job. The mistake wasn't made in Jacksonville hiring him, the mistake was made in him accepting the job.

Let's boil this all down.

The Ohio State fans thinks the problem lies entirely with the Jaguars, not Urban Meyer.

Did you pull a muscle reaching for that conclusion?

I don't think Urbs can hack it in the NFL. None of his college offenses ever presented anything resembling an offense that would work in the NFL. His teams mostly won by out-talenting the opposition later on in his career...not to mention each of his previous 2 high profile stops ended less than gracefully. Anyone with a modicum of football sense could see this was at best a risky hire and at worst a disastrous one.

Can't fault him for taking a paycheck. It's not going to improve his legacy though.

Successful...

Whats your definition of success?

Rhule built Temple from nobodies to a quality D1 team and then took over a Baylor program in complete shambles and brought them back to a 10-11 win program.

Kingsbury never had great w-l at Tech but was thought of highly enough that the second TTU fired him, USC hired him on as their OC and Arizona jumped in to offer him their HC job. TTU's offense was always lights out. Their defense was always what held them back.

Both the Cards and Panthers are off to strong starts.

Rhule didn’t win a Bowl game there. The guy he replaced did.

And that guy took over for Al Golden, who did just as well at Temple as Rhule.

Bowl games are a terrible measure of success. Especially in the CFP era where start players with NFL aspirations are prone to just sit out the bowl game if it's not part of the playoff.

He doesn't have a track record of sustained success since his HC stints have been short so far, but does have a record of turning a program around in quick fashion.

He didn’t turn it around.

They won a bowl game two years before he got there. Then he won 2 games, which is the worst they’ve done in the last 14 years.

Went 2-10 his first season in 2013. 10-4 in each of his last 2 seasons (2015 & 2016), which matches Temple's best season record since 1979.

Similar story at Baylor. 1-11 his first season when he took over a program in complete shambles following the Briles scandals. Two year later they went 11-3 and played in the Sugar Bowl.

I know several here in DFW wanted the Cowboys to hire Rhule instead of McCarthy.

I know Cowboys fans who would like McCarthy to retire so Kellen Moore can take over.

Ya, we will see in a few years how it all plays out.

That said, any of the above are far better options than hiring Urbs.

Idk.

He’s not a control freak like a Saban. But he isn’t an innovator like Kliff or Rhule. Despite always being a winner.

He’s in a tough spot. Took over the worst team in the league, who drafted a QB first when QB was maybe their best position previously. The honestly regressed at the position for this year. If he can tolerate losing for a little while he should be fine.

But I’m with you on things taking awhile to judge.

Kingsbury getting an NFL gig blew my mind.
