Cowboys Did What?

Was he underperforming? Don't follow the Cowboys close enough but I do remember when he got healthy after they took a chance drafting that he was playing pretty well
 
in 2018 he played awesome. In 2019 he got paid and all that money weighed him down. This was the best move for team and player. Dallas could have pulled stunts like other teams pull and just deactivate him for the season. Instead they are paying him what he is owed, getting him out of a bad contract that was never going to pay out anyways, and he can go play for someone else today. There is zero chance another NFCE team, Washington likely, looking to "get the playbook" on Dallas defense this morning.

Jaylon is a good player but one wrong step and Dallas is locked in for $9M next year. We have young talent at that spot so this was the right move for the player and for the team. Now it is up to Neal + LVE + Parsons + Cox to man the LB spot.

If the Eagles were smart, and financially capable, they should have grabbed him up 10 minutes ago.

But, when it comes to LB the Eagles are certainly not smart.

I was thinking this as well. With his potential, even if he is having a bad season and coming off a not so great one, someone will pick him up
 
He won't be a free agent for very long in my opinion.

If they do then they assume his injury guarantee.

He can play as long as he is healthy. This was just a move because of the cap impact if he does get hurt at some point this season.

is he on waivers right now? I am not sure how the NFL works with cut players since we don't see them often. As soon as he was released did his contract get torn up? I know Dallas finishes paying him the $7.2M remaining this year, but thought the contract was null at that point.

So I'd guess that someone can sign him to a much smaller contract for this year since he is already getting paid and then set terms of future years if there are any. Maybe without an injury guarantee.

The move makes sense because of all the good young talent. I wish him well.

I read this morning that if a team picked him up they would inherit his injury guarantee for next season. That's all I know.
Cowboys on the hook for his entire salary less the minimum a team would have to pay for picking him up.

I wonder if that is for the rest of the season or if there is just a waiver like period where that is the case. That's a bad deal for players if they CBA'd that in.

Cowboys release former Pro Bowl LB Smith

The Cowboys have released linebacker Jaylon Smith, the move coming two years after they signed him to a five-year big-money extension.

The move comes as a surprise because Smith has not missed a game in his career and the Cowboys are on the hook for his full $7.2 million base salary.

Never missed a game in his career for the Cowboys? You mean other than, you know, the entire 2016 season.
