Pretty bland. Would have been better off turning this into a spinoff prequel series instead of a movie.

Heard this on a pod yesterday….David Chase always wanted to do a movie, and this was his shot.Pretty bland. Would have been better off turning this into a spinoff prequel series instead of a movie.
But you had no problem figuring out who Silvio was right? I paused a few times and used IMDB to make sure I was following right. Totally get it.Just watched.
maybe I need to watch it again, because I was thoroughly bored during the first watch. I think it was partially due to my trying to figure out who was who.
Watched it. All I can say is

All over the place, and couldn't make it's mind up on what it was about.

I’m contemplating a second watch this weekend. When I had finished the first watch I was happy with some great performances and just being back in that universe for a bit, and it reflects reading up on my initial comments in this thread.
But, then you start thinking critically, and it starts to unravel some for me. I’ve really started to come to the understanding that this was nothing more than some prestige fan fiction. And, I’m ultimately OK with that.
Im glad this was made. I have some wishes that would have made it better to me. Either way, I’m finding I might have had too high of expectations. This wasn’t going to just pop up and capture all the magic that was the show. That’s not realistic.
I’m hoping a second watch will frame this properly for me as well.
Oh no’s….they made a movie that wasn’t close to as good as one of the greatest shows ever. They shouldn’t do that again.Settle down fellas! That was just the "taste". The franchise is just starting......
It takes time to set up character's and develop some continuity to the original series. The boys are young guns coming up in the ranks putting it their "time". They probably not even made men yet. They may be writing the next film script right now. Think of the possibilities!
Lets be real.....if they make Many Saints of Newark Part Deux...
Y'all will watch it! They hooked you before you knew you were hooked.....it's not that you disliked it or it was bad....it's that it left you wanting more. BOOM! Gotcha!
When he was fighting with his mother and he yelled something to the effect of “ALL I GET ARE ACCUSATIONS!”, I totally saw Tony Soprano. Not sure if that was intentional direction/acting, or just the son having his fathers mannerisms.I thought it was okay. Agree that it was a bit all over the place. Didn’t really read/watch a lot of previews do I went in thinking it would be more focused on Tony.
Michael Gandolfini was pretty good and absolutely nailed quite a few of “Tony’s” mannerisms.

Narrator-Christopher reminded us of that in the opening scene in the cemetery. In fact, I think he mentioned it 3 separate times during the movie (in the opening scene, when he mentions that Tony gave his wife and daughter his pocket change after he killed him, and as an aside saying this is the man he went to hell for). One thing from the previews that I had not considered while watching it was the scene when baby Christopher is shown to Tony and the baby cries. Christopher's Mom makes a comment about Tony and Tony says he doesn't understand..."It's like he's scared of me!"
I had forgot that Tony killed Christopher in the The Soprano's series. After remembering that it made that scene better.

Speaking of which, Narrator-Christopher made a few comments that were CLEARLY, blatantly wrong. I suspect that was there to explain off some of the inconsistencies.
I don’t remember what it was, but I do remember near the beginning (first 30 mins or so, I would guess) he made a historical (non sopranos specific) statement that was inaccurate. It jumped out at me at the time. And since I had already heard the theories about the inaccuracies being due to Christopher just being wrong, it stuck with me.What were the statements he made that were wrong?

That wasn’t the scene I was referring to. I will see if I can’t find the “quote” tonight…It may have been in the re-created fair scene when Johnnyboy was caught with the other crew members meeting at the fair while pretending to take Tony's sister Janice. That's the scene from the Saprano's where Tony as a young kid climbed in the trunk and was pissed when he thought his Dad was leaving him out. The riots in Newark were occurring at that time placing young Tony as a 10 year old kid.
Yet in this movie..."The Many Saints of Newark"...the riots are also depicted as occurring. Only this time Tony is a young man ditching college and being groomed by his mentor, Dickie Moltisanti.

I knew from the show that Pussy was already a made guy and he was one of the ones that stood up for Tony over Feech’s card game (along with Richie Aprile). But I was always under the impression that Silvio is Tony’s age because he was supposed to be in Tony and Jackie Sr’s crew going back High School, early 20’s (according to Ralph Cifaretto). From the show, I never got the sense that Silvio and Pussy were that much older than Tony. That was a bit jarring for me.
