Astroworld Festival tragedy

Most of the content is live, and they regularly live broadcast shows, which is pretty cool. They're doing that with other bands as well.

I used to think that once Stern quit, SiriusXM would go out of business because they didn't offer anything markedly different than other options you can get for free. I think this has set them apart, now. In fact, I hardly listen to Stern anymore.
oh I love Sirius...I don't ever want to be without it and have to go back to terrestrial radio or streaming from my phone. I like the variety.

and I never listened to Stern on there.

I can't listen to Stern anymore. Obnoxious af.

I saw Phish in the 90's. I can't really listen to the hippie jam bands too much anymore. Once in a moon, I'll get a hair up my butt for the Dead, but there is just too much other stuff that I haven't worn out yet.

I’ll take SiriusXM over Pandora any day. Outlaw Country on there has opened my ears to artists and styles of music that I had disregarded completely in the past and that’s just one of many stations I listen to. Worth every penny IMO

I've been to a number of Dave Matthews Band shows and a couple moe. shows...but never Phish. Never made that jump to the big time jam bands.

but I do like listening to them as background music

I can certainly understand people who don't like their style, but there isn't a better improvisational rock band out there. Maybe never has been. From that standpoint, they're off the fucking charts. The shit they've been doing during this summer/fall tour has blown me away.
The Dave Matthews Band is really good.

Guess the only real jam band I’ve seen live is Widespread Panic. I enjoyed it. Would go back

just started streaming Jam through my Alexa.

thanks for the recommendation. Good to have on in the background

I agree. I probably consider myself a bigger fan of theirs than Phish, but from a strictly improvisational standpoint, Phish is head and shoulders above.

agree

DMB is like Jam Band Lite

I’ll never understand how R.E.M. made it so big, but Widespread is still more or less known as an Athens band. Wouldn’t cross the road to see REM play for free, but love me some Widespread

While I understand the "Jam Band" box, I just see these three bands as being so different.

Phish's focus is nearly entirely on the live, improvisational performances. Often the lyrical content is silly or nonsensical.

DMB's music and lyrics are heavy and often dark, which I appreciate. While they do jam songs, they never leave the general structure of the song.

Admittedly, I don't know a lot of Moe. I've heard some on SXM and enjoyed it enough, but I don't put them anywhere near Phish's musicality or DMB's content.

nothing wrong with REM. They struck gold in the 80's and hung around through the 90s with two back to back great albums

I will agree with everything you say here.

and also why I like DMB to this day. Whenever I hear them I am reminded at how much I enjoy their stuff.

I think I had a dream they were doing a concert with their Lillywhite session stuff...I think that was a dream...

I heard an interview with Trey where he was saying that as far back as Picture of Nectar (3rd studio album), they were writing albums mostly with the live shows in mind.

ie - we need more mellow tunes, or we need another funky one, or we need some more minor tonalities, that they could use while compiling set lists.

Trey is really fucking smart when it comes to that.

Phish did a thirteen night run at Madison Square Garden in 2017 that they called The Baker's Dozen.

Thirteen full concerts and they didn't repeat a single song. Something like 240 songs. Like them or not, that is fucking brilliant.
