First off, this post is not to build up a team, nor has it been created to rip a team apart. In thinking back to the CFP games that have been played, I have often pondered the teams that have made it, and the teams that have missed it. If someone that could predict the future would have told you when the CFP was created and through last season that Michigan State was going to be a participant, but not Florida nor Auburn nor Michigan, would you believe them? Would you believe if this person also said that Washington would make the playoff but not Texas nor Southern California, nor Wisconsin? Which teams have surprised you the most by not making the CFP in its history?

Can’t even make this stupid poll.

fuck my life fml GIF

MSU, but not UF, UM or Auburn:

Not surprising. MSU had several 11+ win seasons before making it to the CFP.

UF hasn't been great in over a decade. Auburn's a wildcard and they're only dangerous about once or twice every decade or so. UM making the CFP actually would've been more surprising than MSU imo. Other than 2016, UM has been mostly mediocre in the last 15 yrs or so.

UW, but not UTX or Tejas:

Yeah, UW came out of nowhere. They almost did it twice actually.

USC & Tejas both suck hairy ass though. Does USC even give a shit about football anymore? And nobody underachieves like Texas.

Here is what is really funny. If the CFP has been the 12 team format from the start, Texas still wouldn't have made it. LOL. Nor would UTjr (and Vandy, the two SEC teams that wouldn't have made it).

The problem with the 4 team CFP is that it came about right when top recruiting really consolidated in about 5 or 6 teams. Even though my team is one of those teams that recruits at an elite level, I am hoping that a 12 team CFP will result in some players choosing to play in the mid-tier schools, knowing they can get in the CFP. The top dogs will still be the top dogs, but it will cycle. I believe that when more teams have a chance, no matter how small that chance may be, fan interest will be preserved, and the game as a whole will be better.

i gotta say, with us being, what, 8 years into this experiment, i'm pretty surprised that USC hasn't been in ONE playoff yet.

I would have loved to see some of those teams that lost early but got hot at the end of the year get into the playoffs. Or the ones that had "brain farts" games somewhere along the way that eliminated them. Those teams "might" have had better results than some of the semifinal teams that played well at the beginning of the season and were just surviving late.

But, the system was designed to keep those late season "hot teams" from getting in. And they use the "the whole season/every game matters" ruse as the reason. Utah, Oklahoma State, Wisconsin, and A&M would be good examples this year. None of them looked good early but seem to get it together.

I also feel like the non blue blood teams of P5 conferences would be kept out anyway due to not drawing many fans for the big games. I mean I really don't see Duke being included in the CFP even if undefeated. They would start the season so far down the preseason rankings, they would never recover. Same thing this season with Wake Forest, even if undefeated. We all know the ACC is trash this season, and that would be held against the ACC undefeated conference champion that won't draw a crowd.

If any P5 team is undefeated and they aren't included in the CFP, are they really playing in a P5 conference? Not having gone through a difficult conference schedule is what eliminated UCF a few years ago and what Cincy if dealing with right now.

Washington and Clemson are below avg size P5 schools / fanbases and still got in.
At the moment Wake would be #5 , #6 in the polls if undefeated and only thing that would keep them out of the CFP are their narrow victories vs weaker opponents and their weaker OOC (Old Diminion, Norfolk State, Army, UNC)

There was a decent chance OU would have been left out this year even if they ran the table in the B12.
