Been James Franklin's DC for a few years now. His teams at PSU and elsewhere typically have had strong defenses, usually top 20. Is known to be a pretty good recruiter with strong ties to the DMV and mid-atlantic area, something sorely lacking under Fuente. He's a pretty decent candidate despite not having the name value of some other candidates. In way, its kinda like hiring Bud Foster if Foster was in his early 50s and was a better recruiter. Best I can tell for cruising boards and social media, Penn St fans are pretty bummed to lose him, contrasted to Bama fans that are helping BoB pack to wherever.

I think he was asked about it from the media as soon as Fuente was let go and he said he loved Blacksburg but wanted to make a name for himself somewhere else.

What Rubin said above and also there was some talk behind the scenes last year that we gauged interest. AD was close to firing Fuente last year (he absolutely should have), but pussied out. Shane didn't have interest for the reasons I mentioned and went to South Carolina.
