A somber reminder of the attack on our naval base at Pearl Harbor on this day in 1941. I'd rather not see this thread become a political football with blame being tossed at one party or president, but more of a clearinghouse to share stories that you may have heard from your parents/grandparents and how it impacted every day life in our country.

I can only imagine what the mood of the country was once the dust settled and rescue/clean up began.

My mother was 6 years old when Pearl Harbor happened.
She would tell me stories about rationing, and how family members would get extra sugar on the black market, and how everyone had ration books. And rubber. Tires were hard to get.

Oh, and fuck the Japs
 
Pops Racer was only 12 (Ma was 8) when the attack happened. and they really never spoke about how his folks or aunts and uncles felt about it. Basically they just settled in to war effort in the coming years, having to deal with things that I'm not sure this country could pull off in today's world.

Drafting all able bodied young men, rationing food and anything that would be considered a "war material",
commandeering industrial production to build our war machines, intense patriotism/nationalism etc. I sometimes wonder if we could do again and have success.
 
That was a tough generation. Most of the adults had lived through the depression and then had to tighten their belts again for WWII.

My grandma was a tough ol' bird and pinched pennies all the way to her final days in the early 2000's even though she didn't have to anymore.

She would unplug her tv at night because she knew it was using electricity even when shut off. LOL

I haven't been to Hawaii and would love to go just to visit Pearl harbor and the Arizona Memorial. My middle boy went about 4 or 5 years ago and told me it was incredibly quiet at the memorial and he and his (now) wife said they had chills and the hair on their arms was standing straight up the whole time they were there. Personally, I'd probably be crying behind my sunglasses.

The Japs were so fucking scared they didn't even finish the job and failed to send their 3rd wave, which would have destroyed the Dry Docks and Fuel Storage.

It was a fatal decision for them. And they paid the price for it in years to come
