I remember coming home from tennis one afternoon in college and my dad was leaving the house to go back to work after lunch

he calls me over to his car and pops the trunk and there was a dead cat in there.

earlier he told me about this cat that kept walking through his yard and he had been trying to sting it with the bb gun...just one pump.

well I guess he hit a sweet spot. The cat jumped in the air and ran off...but then laid down next to his car in a pool of blood.

he was heading off to get rid of the body...

Yes, I would help my kid hide the body and then have a discussion about how the body came to be there, what happens now and if he wanted a ride to the airport or police station.

Family trust comes before laws, other people's morals or society.

You damn right you did by calling me a "bad parent".

My kids are both National Honors Society.
Do I think that will keep them from riding with someone drunk, drinking alcohol themselves, or trying drugs?

Nope!!

I know better than that. What's important is mitigating the damage that can be done with those choices.

That starts with them trusting me enough to be honest with me.

Several years ago I was heading to work and hit a dog. He actually belonged to friends of ours. I turned around and came back but he was gone so I thought he must be ok as he was a pretty big dog. A couple of weeks later I hear that the wife who already had some mental health issues totally went off the rails because he was killed.

I really struggled as to whether I should say something to them

I would not. It goes back to your statement about "you got in trouble, get your way out". Might depend on circumstances, but I cant see a world where I help my kid get away with murder. Doesnt mean I wont love them, but I didnt raise them that way, and if they chose that, they can deal with it on their own.
