Movie The Matrix 4: Resurrections (2021)

Prediction: Trinity was really “the one” the entire time.

I was expecting to be disappointed, but wasn’t.

I thought it was kinda a mess.

It WANTED to be a trans-activist movie, but then it wanted to be about how the political-Media complex is brainwashing everyone and how that is what the people want, but then it wants to be an LBTQXYZ- activist movie again, then it wants to be a brutal, ”how many people can we kill in fucked up ways” brainstorm session, then it wants to be about woman’s lib…

So many Alt-messages buried here, there and everywhere.

Granted, maybe it is impossible for me to watch anything from a Wachowski ever again without seeing those messages oozing out of every scene, but they put themselves into that position with their careers to date (I understand this one only involved Lana…). But I couldn’t watch this movie without getting yanked out of it by these tropes getting dropped in all over.

Maybe I will need to watch it again in order to appreciate any story that may be there, but at 2.5 hours, I doubt I will give it the second viewing.

You never know the lay of the land, the parameters, or the stakes. Much too much exposition. It starts with a cool tweak on the Matrix norm, but then just throws a bunch of stuff at you without cohesion.

I enjoyed the movie.

So… like the first movies…

Took Mrs. Sickness to see it. Wasn't horrendous.

Meh.
Seems like they came up with the action set pieces, then tried to write around them.

It’s probably the best matrix sequel. Don’t know what some of you were watching.

Just got back from seeing in IMAX.

I went going in without any real expectations of what this movie was going to be like. And I think that is the way you have to go into it because if you are expecting a movie with the action and tone of the originals than you will be disappointed. There really wasn't a lot of action in the movie and the action that was present was really choppy with how it was shot and it was right on top of the action really close with the camera. With the exception of the ending action sequence to the movie which was really good and vicious and probably better than any action sequence in at least the 3rd Matrix movie, the rest of the movies action was almost embarrassing in the drop of quality from the originals. That said I really enjoyed the movie. The first hour or so was really good with just trying to figure out what was going on. I still don't like how they brought back some characters but used different actors. They tried to explain why but it seemed all so unnecessary to me and they should have just brought back the original actors to play these same parts and the story could have remained the same. Also at times it did a bit too much self referencing and in a way to make fun of itself which is a complete departure from the tone and seriousness of the original trilogy.

But I enjoyed it, it could have been a lot worse. A lot of a smaller scaled film in regards to the importance of the story. The original trilogy felt one a story of great importance because it is Neo being the one and saving Zion and all of that. Whereas this movie there is no real need for Neo in the real world and the story ultimately just becomes hey let's help Neo with what he wants/needs to do here even if it might result in a worse situation for everyone else.

It's hard to put it against and rank against the others because they are just such drastically different movies. But I probably enjoyed more than the 3rd one so it would go The Matrix > Reloaded > Resurrections > Revolutions for me.

Will probably give it another watch at some point on HBO in the next week or so.

I didn't notice any sort of trans messaging in it or any lgbt stuff besides what looked like potentially 2 lesbian couples.

I think the ending commentary about people choosing to want to be controlled works really well for the current situation of covid restrictions and peoples support of them even though I know that wasn't the intended message of it.

There a bunch of “You binaries think this or that” stuff. In context, it was referring to organic vs digital, but the use of the term, given the writer of the movie, clearly was bringing other meaning/activism.

The originals weren’t even as much of a trans allegory as people are trying to say now. The Wachowskis have said they weren’t trying to consciously push it, though it probably came out, the only direct reference to anything trans was going to be switch swapping genders between the real world and the matrix, and it was nixed by Warner brothers.

The new movie had a similar vibe, some of that is going to seep into the messaging given the creator/director’s experience. But if all you got is a couple maybe lesbian couples and “oh and that one guy seemed gay” you’re searching for it way too hard seemingly because you want to have a reason to be disgusted and any of the actual messaging likely went right over your head anyway.
