I knew something was wrong. I have the blu-ray trilogy, Ultimate Matrix, which I haven't viewed in a few years. I recalled Andy and Larry as the writer/directors. I was right; that's what it says on the package. But I've been out of touch.

Larry (Lana) is understood to have had gender confirmation surgery after Speed Racer (2008) in 2008. Brother Andy (Lilly) Wachowski revealed on March 8, 2016, that she was transgender as well. Life is so confusing these days. :scratch:

I may skip this. Was hoping for a serious continuation of the Matrix series. Don't want to be preached to about LGBTQ.

Maybe I'll see the movie when it's free.

did you read my post you responded to though? I didn’t get a preachy vibe at all. If having a couple characters who seem like they’re probably gay, even though it’s never confirmed or talked about or focused on at all is too much for you, probably just avoid most things. Nothing about any of the leftist or LGBT messaging in this one is any more in your face or over the top than the original trilogy, so if those ones didn’t bother you, don’t see why this one would. Unless you’re just more aware of it now so you’ll notice every little thing that might be that and make you not enjoy it.

As far as a serious continuation goes. I think it could be argued it’s the best Matrix sequel. I’d at least say it’s definitely not the worst matrix sequel. But that’ll be up to you to decide if/when you see it.
 
It’s good but not great. I’d put it as the second best in the series behind the first.

Let me put it this way for a Matrix movie it was much better than Kingdom of The Crystal Skull was for an Indiana Jones movie.

I get where you are coming from as my brother loved the first movie and hated the next two so I told him to skip this one. This one I felt attempted to fix some of the issues from the 3rd movie which really screwed the universe as a whole. If the 3rd movie had nailed the landing then it would have made the second one better by default and the series would rank much higher. Considering what they had to work with the 4th movie is a very good attempt at salvaging the universe. Probably will not watch again and definitely think they should just end it here but I wouldn't call it awful.

If you take away people who are determined to hate it because they recently learned the whole franchise has political messaging that doesn’t align with theirs, I’m not seeing any legit criticisms about what makes it ‘awful.’

I think you summed it up pretty good. I don’t know what they could have done better if they had to bring it back. It’s confusing for half the movie, in a good way that keeps you interested, it’s self deprecating, in a good way that adds a bit of a lighthearted vibe, then it resolves everything in a good way that fits with the franchise.

They could have easily just threw together some thoughtless reboot that added nothing to the original story, instead they took a chance not doing that, and did a pretty good job with it.

It was clearly getting made regardless of how it was done, they even found a way to mock it in the movie.

If you were a fan of the original(s) and hated this one, the problem is probably you.

This is a sequel, not a reboot.

And what the fuck is really original about this? Everything is the same, the matrix is a computer program where everything is normal and the real world is a dystopia where humans live underground because the machines still own the surface. The acting is bad in this movie. The story is bad in this movie. The returning characters are either completely different or complete shells of their old characters. There was no substance added. It was a dumb and unnecessary movie and you can feel it from the actors and the directors.

Since many of you said it's better than 2 & 3 but not as good as 1, I will def see it.

Also, LOL at getting upset about a movie.... unless it's Star Wars. Then I will fucking fight you about muh opinion!!

Not even close. And for reference, I literally watched 2, 3, then this... in order... in the same night.

The first is far and away the best, but the other two sequels progressed the story and conversation and allowed for some, albeit minimal, character growth. The acting wasn't nearly as bad either. This one offers nothing.
