Washington's new team name: Washington Commanders!

If they were going this route they should've done something line Admirals or Generals.

Commanders sounds like an XFL team.

It isn't a great new name, but it isn't that bad, I am sure in a year or two it'll be fine, they could've done worse.

the worst thing about it to me is that Commanders isn't a word that can be shortened like other 3-syllable team names

unless they want to be called the Commies

I was thinking exactly this yesterday, it's too long and can't be shortened unless you are right they go with "Commies" which obviously they won't. This must've not been thought out. But every other team can come up with shortened names for their team name.

Patriots - Pats
Buccaneers - Bucs
etc.

Hell even some teams that don't need to be shortened can be shortened like Vikings can be Vikes, Giants to G-Men, Cowboys to Boys. Although as we sit here thinking Washington Commanders would never shorten their name to Commies, they did shorten Redskins to 'Skins, which if you think about it is sort of an odd shortened name.

the one thing I saw that makes me scratch my head is that they said there will be a fight song similar to their old one...

so I am wondering if they picked Commanders with that as a big selling point? Something that fits into their "Braves on the warpath" fight song?

Hail the Commanders
Hail victory
something something warpath
Fight for all DC!

Seems like they invested in the wrong thing if this was a big selling point as I never knew of such fight song. I think the fans would've taken a better mascot name than a name that fits well into a fight song. Fight songs are for college anyways.

as an Eagles fan, I disagree

the Eagles fight song slaps, as the kids would say

Similarly shortening Commanders to 'Derrs seems apt.
if they had named the team the Washington Transgenders the LGBTQ community would be applauding the name change and especially the new rainbow themed uniforms.

They missed the mark. They should have just rebranded as "skins"

Lol, on that same note, the Cleveland Indians should have gone to Cleveland Tribe. 1.) They already incorporated that term within their franchise and fanbase, and 2.) They could refer to "Tribe" as the community and city of Cleveland, so to get rid of their Native American offensive stuff, yet still keep some of their history together but in a different light and term.

Instead they go with GuarDIANS instead of inDIANS.

I completely agree. There were several options that would have been unoffensive and kept a linkage to the franchise's history. To say I am disappointed with their choice is an understatement

disagree

Guardians will be fine. It at least has a tie to the city and all that...

I don't even know what you are doing with Guardians/Indians...that's dumb

Maybe Washington should've kept the Red part in there, I think that was why Red Wolves was appealing, it's just an easier transition Washington Red Wolves, your mind is already use to saying Washington Redskins it would just sort of keep your mind on the same path as you are saying the team name. Then you could shorten your team name to Wolves when need be.

Also keeping with respect and honor to the Native American heritage, I am sure there would be some way to respectably honor your past with a Red Wolves theme given the Wolf is a figure within Native American history.

Well it's like they tried to keep some of their history together with the DIANS ending, they are keeping practically the same lettering and font, so from afar, if you see a Cleveland baseball jersey out there, with their font it's hard to tell the difference if the jersey reads, INDIANS or GUARDIANS.

no...not aligned with you on that one

Fair enough, it's a bit out there thought, just my mind see's Guardians on their jerseys and it's hardly a different look than Indians on their jerseys, just by the font and style. It's like there is still a connection to their previous name as they didn't go completely the other way like Commanders have nothing at all similar to Redskins.

Cleveland has a good color scheme and all that...they didn't need to do a full redesign with the name change

but neither did Washington. The uniforms from last season were actually really great looking. Why fuck with that?
