Jim Harbaugh gone to NFL

Sounds to me like Gattis wanted the HC job in the last couple weeks and that interest wasn’t reciprocated.

That's what you took from that? I took it as, my HC literally told me to take a week off, while I go chase my dream to be a NFL coach, essentially leaving his staff to wait and wonder if they'd even have a job for the upcoming season.

I'm shocked all the coaches didn't bounce. Harbaugh is an absolutely moron to think his coaches were going to sit around and wait to see what happens. He deserves to have all his coaches leave on him and UM deserves to be stuck with table scraps to fill their staff for the BS move Harbaugh pulled.

Really wish my cousin would hit the portal. What a dumpster fire that program is gonna be for awhile.

Harbaugh is not administration

Yeah. Because with Harbaugh back that would be no issue. Especially after Harbaugh was the one to give him a chance and he spent 10 minutes during his award speech basically on the verge of tears over that. He says administration and I think that’s not targeted at Harbaugh.

Of course Harbaugh is an issue. If you have a HC who is actively pursuing a job elsewhere -- guess what, that means he doesn't have a job, as the new HC is going to bring in his own guys.

It isn't rocket science.

Nah. From outside he was the clear cut person in line to get the HC job. The only way this makes sense is if the admin told him otherwise.

He has never held a HC job at any level. Could he have been given the job? Possibly as an interim coach if Harbaugh bounced, but he literally took the exact same job, simply at a different school. It isn't as if Mario Cristobal is going anywhere, so he won't be taking over the Miami program.

He just wanted out of Michigan and to have some job security.

I think winning the best coordinator award this years, 3 years under Harbaugh at Michigan and with rumors all having him at the top; it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think you’re next in line. Especially with the trend around college being to escalate from within.

And prior to this past year, everyone wanted him fired, because we were atrocious. As a side note -- IF there were rumors of him at the top -- the last thing he'd do is make a lateral move for the same position, at a school with a young coach, who isn't going anywhere.

Explain that one?

I consider 2020 a gimme. Lots of weird stuff happened that year. Kids sat out, games were odd times. There was no ease into the season. Meh. 2019 and 2021 he was pretty good.

I think he felt slighted by the admin and left.

2019 wasn't anything special. UM's offense looked great against the bottom feeders and we averaged like 17 ppg in the games against ranked opponents. It is why people were calling for his head, not only after 2019, but 2020. 2021 is the first year our offense looked good.

I've defended Harbaugh on some of the foolishness he has done since being HC, but nothing happening right now is surprising me. The fact no recruits have bounced is what is surprising. The coaches want job security -- if you have a HC who is actively going out to look for a new job -- they aren't going to sit around and hope he comes back. They are going to do exactly what Mike McDonald did and what Josh Gattis did -- they are going where they have job security.

I still don’t think Harbaugh looking for an nfl position was the problem here. Again, in doing so that should have given Gattis the go ahead spot to replace him.

Unless he asked if he would be in consideration for the HC job if Harbaugh left and he was straight told no

I think that's what happened. That's what NewPhone disputing. I don't think it had to do with Harbaugh, I think when Harbaugh was exploring options he found out where he was on the pecking order.

From Sam Webb this morning, it looks like the issue was who Harbaugh was in talks with to take to the pros -- hint, it wasn't Gattis

"I'll get deeper into it in a reaction blog, but the long and short of it was an extension was offered here, but he felt Miami wanted him a lot more, so he took it. This was undoubtedly affected by Jim's pro dalliance. Most significant in that is the Jim/Weiss connection that would've carried on to the pros, and has him as the favorite now to assume Gattis' role."

Weiss is also the name everyone is throwing around to replace Gattis in the OC role. So it sounds like it was Harbaugh not wanting to make the jump to the NFL with Gattis, combined with a lower offer than Miami.
