Apple doesn't do the exact same thing, though. That's the difference. Apple doesn't sell user data the way Google does.

No I'm reading as they use the data to sell products, which when I did snapshot forever ago for a whole month never resulted in any additional sales brochures in the mail.


Look at location data policy for the whole month you have to use it (then delete forever and still receive discount)

Ok. That's not what that says though. In their T&C's which anyone using Snapshot has agreed to, they state they can sell your data (both PII and anonymized) to third parties.

And they are doing that, and they are making good money off of it. Trust me, I work in big data. I've done work with new consumer privacy laws such as GDPR for our overseas partners as well as the CCPA and 50 different flavors here in the US. That "we may share" is boilerplate verbiage for when they want to monetize data they collected on you.

Pii is name and address and phone number not the location data

Once again, it's right there in their T&C's, they have more than your location data.

They even go on in that same link to be more explicit that they share PII because they take the time to spell out other anonymized data they will sell to anyone.
We may share de-personalized Snapshot data more broadly. De-personalizing the data means that we remove personally identifiable information so that the data cannot be associated with a particular driver or policyholder.

And to catch the edit, PII is any combination of data that someone could use to single someone out. There is no complete list of what is or isn't PII.

Go and read their terms further then. When i read it all location data was anonymized except for the use in insurance claims and determining miles driven and acceleration and stopping time.

Lets pretend you are right, either way "selling your data" for a month is not that valuable and it isnt like you have a company offering to directly pay you for your location data. you could also opt for the device that only stays in your car and you dont even have to drive the car to get the discount. I got the discount on a vehicle that didnt go but maybe 1 mile per week.

As far as google vs apple they are both equally scummy both say they dont sell your location data

I gave you link with their exact verbiage and even posted the quote from it multiple times. Not sure what else you want me to read, they are explicit that they will share both anonymized and PII data with third parties.

As for the second paragraph if you are talking about the mobile app then it states it usually is 6 months of data. During that 6 month you should note the app is running in the background 24/7, not just while you are driving. That's red flag #1 for me, and I don't care what they claim they aren't doing with the data. They have it, they state they keep it forever...no thanks. If you are talking about the plug in, then that is in your car all the time. And I just read it beeps at you if you "brake too hard".

Who the hell signs up for this? :facepalm:

A footprint snapshot for an individual for a month is typically enough to establish their travel patterns regarding shopping and entertainment.

is someone else offering to pay you for your data? 6 months? where are you getting 6 months? ive done this with multiple companies and never was it more than 60 days.

So lets go with the maximum amount of days, you can have the device that plugs into the car and only reports where the vehicle is for 60 days and you basically get paid for it for as long as you hold your policy (long long after the device is gone)
I had it in one vehicle that just happened to have transmission issues right as i got the device only ever went and turned the car on when i get an email sayin "we think your device stopped working" think that was state farm forever ago. so they saw a vehicle sitting in a drive way they saw one that only went to and from one specific place and we didnt bother with the 3rd vehicle because it was getting sold as soon as the one with transmission issues was figured out. Not exactly the same when we switch to progressive but close enough. 30 days one vehicle was to and from 1 location and back home only the other was to and from kids school and grocery shopping it wasnt during a high consumer spending period and i never got so much as a flyer in the mail.

so with progressive ive been with them for i dont know 8 years now since we did that? somethin around there and we had it for 30 days per vehicle (simultaneously) we save 250-300 per year over 8 years 2000-2400 bucks for 30 days of data..... that is who the hell signs up for this...


The original vehicles we did it with are no longer even part of the policy and yet i still get the snapshot discount.
