So what happens if CFP splits right down the middle?

Guess I can say FL/uga/SCe/Ky pod right now... would be "by far" the weakest pod too?

I'm pulling for College Football. But I'm only a fan/spectator. It seems the participants (conferences, schools, media, players, etc) are in the a Scarcity versus Abundance mode or in the old Win/Lose one. They are definitely not in the Win/Win mindset and a lot closer to the Lose/Lose.
Here's where I'm coming from: I watch maybe 5% of the pro sports that I used to follow on a regular basis. Baseball pulled too much stupid shit. So did football. And NASCAR. Basketball is even worse. So I have been left with an avid interest in college sports but even there I've lost any interest in college basketball with the best players leaving after only one season. Football has pretty much been my last refuge. And now they're F'ing it up with turning it into a semi-pro business and virtually no control over the coaches, the players or the boosters. Not to mention the conferences throwing shit at each other like monkeys at the zoo over the playoff structure. I am really starting to understand the younger crowd with their attitude of "Earn my attention, dude; if you want me to spend my time watching your sport then impress me. I've got plenty of other things to do". To be honest, I have been surprised to see attendance falling like a rock over many years and hearing people I talk to who are disgusted with the way the sport has changed so much over the past couple of years. We'll see what happens over the next 3 years because it's going to make or break the sport for millions of fans.......who buy the tickets, subscribe to the broadcasts, make the donations, etc. :pop2:

I started to understand it when my two daughters and their families said adios to cable. At first I was like WTH? It really hit me when my youngest daughter explained it to me. She has always been a sports freak and watched it with me growing up. Even when she got older we'd sit at a sports bar and watch games while her mother and sister shopped. When I asked about "cutting the cord" her comment was, "If THEY think THEY are going to make me pay for a bunch of games I don't want to watch just to get a few games I do want to watch, they're crazy. I ain't doing it." That generation wants ala carte and only wants to pay for ala carte.

1. OP is correct that there will be an SEC v. Alliance showdown. Your no. 3 proves that.

2. The ACC's leverage disappeared when they no longer required unanimity to make the decision. As I pointed out above, the Alliance can veto new rules with their 3 conference votes. But, ND appears to be aligned with the SEC on CFP, so that isn't going to work.

3. The SEC will not agree to any of what you typed. They won't agree on limiting how many get in the playoffs, or how many get to the NC game. If one does not want more than 3 SEC teams to get into the CFP, put out a better product. They are getting P5 AQs ... trying to further limit the SEC won't work. The initial CFP concentrated on the "4 best" so lets hope that the conferences can agree that it needs to be the 6 best at-large, regardless of conference.

Having said all that, you can't go back in history and ever find 6 SEC teams in the top 12. 3 often, 4 occasionally. But it isn't a true threat. Here are the numbers, with an * where OU would have also been in. As we know, UT never would have gotten in.

2014 - 3
2015 - 2*
2016 - 1*
2017 - 3*
2018 - 4*
2019 - 4*
2020 - 4*
2021 - 3

While that looks like 3 years where it would get 5 in, when the SEC adds OU and TX, and we go to 9 conference games there is a chance that one of the lower qualifying teams comes in at 13-16 instead of 10-12.
The Alliance isn’t a threat to the SEC.

I didn’t say the SEC would agree to the terms only what the other conferences want because they are scared.

The SEC has the ultimate Trump card because they literally have the ability to pull anyone from any league and reimagine college football as they see fit, call it a nuclear option. We just killed the Big 12 and honestly could do it to the ACC as well. The B1G and ND are the only ones that aren’t vulnerable. The SEC could offer an independent USC and ND an exclusive offer to participate as they see fit as OOC opponents with guaranteed games and admit FSU and Clemson and game over.

It won’t happen but when you control 80% of the best ratings in CFB you have the clout to go home and take your ball with you.

At the end of the day everyone is looking out for their own interest and they should. We can talk about extreme measures all day but the fact is ALL of the conference commissioners know the landscape of college football has been drastically changed through NIL and the portal. There is too much money at stake to harm CFB or not get an expanded playoff done so it will happen. Until they work out a deal (which they eventually will and probably sooner rather than later) there is going to be posturing and some back and forth because that’s how the game is played.

The last thing I’m worried about in CFB is an expanded playoff getting done because it will happen.

The Top of the Big12 is no where near as good as the top of the SEC and the bottom… I Don’t know if I would put money that Kansas is better than Vandy.
Kansas is better than Vandy. Vandy couldn’t beat Texas.

Here's a long, detailed article from ESPN on this subject. And buried down in the article is a comment about "a desperate plea for federal legislation to manage NIL". I have been harping about this likely development for months. The last thing we need is the Feds getting involved in all of this. But wait; here it comes. And there would actually be people who would be surprised if the politicians F it all up like they do everything else.

The Alliance explained: ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 on CFP vote, scheduling and what comes next

I tried doing the a La carte.. Ended up spending more than cable with the ultimate package (Fios). Unfortunately for me I can only get xfinity and they charge much more.. But even they are cheaper for me than getting my sports a la carte. Also I can't stand watching internet TV and being behind 5-10 seconds compared to cable broadcasts

We went with YouTube TV about two years ago and we love it. A lot cheaper, a running ton of channels and we can watch everything on our phones or computers even if we aren't home. I've yet to miss a really important game that I couldn't find there.

That's what both my daughters and their families are using. But, I'm technologically challenged, so I feel like I'm stuck paying for a whole bunch of channels I don't watch and could care less about. But, I can only choose among "bundles" which means I have to take Liver and Onions in order to get my favorite BBQ! (We do have an Amazon Prime account for other things so we get all of their offerings. But some programs on it even require a fee.)

OK, there's about 85 channels on YouTube TV. I sat down one afternoon and winnowed out the crap we never want to watch and then put the rest of the channels into groups of news, sports, movies, science, etc. Now it's super easy to use. It's no harder to connect to YouTube TV than it is connecting to any other website. You just click and watch. The best part is if I need to leave the house in the middle of a game I just watch/listen to it in the car without missing a play. Or if I want to watch something while I'm traveling it's the same as if I'm home. Plus it's cheap.

The question to be answered is "why is attendance falling?" If it's because of competitive imbalance, that might be hard to solve. NIL, free agency and CFP expansion are the only things I can think of as college sports is different from pro sports and you can't legislate parity. You also have to look at other sports where teams like the Patriots, Lakers/Celtics/Bulls/Warriors have dominated over time and it hasn't affected their numbers (or has it?). If it's because we can now watch 50 games in a weekend on HD TVs that's a different issue.

So the question for you and for those leading the sport, what is it that is making it less interesting for you?

The only thing I don't like about YTTV is the lack of the regional Bally channels. That screws up my NHL Canes for me, and the Braves for my 93 year old mom.

Threads on conference realignment where the first item is to break up the conferences is the biggest waste of time on any sports board, and that's saying something.
You mean like “OU and TX are going to the SEC” type of break-ups or just the ones you want to reference?

ask your self would i rather play

12-2 Oklahoma state or 14-1 UGA?
12-2 Baylor or 13-2 Alabama?
11-2 Oklahoma or 10-3 Ole Miss?
7-6 Iowa State or 10-3 Kentucky?
8-5 Kansas State or 9-4 Arkansas?
7-6 TT or 8-4 Texas A&M,
6-7 West Virginia 5-7 Texas, 5-7 TCU, or 6-7 Auburn, 6-7 Missouri, 7-6 South Carolina, 6-7 Florida, 6-7 LSU?
2-10 Kansas or 2-10 Vandy

and tell me that again
Yearly, besides the top two SEC teams, I’d much rather go through a typical SEC schedule than a nine game b12 schedule. Easy.

Well, that one is actually happening. No, I am referring to the type you referenced where some says, let's take the top 64 teams and create four 16 team conferences. That's the idiocy I am talking about.

On the other hand, you can stop it, go take a leak and come right back to where you left off. I do that sometimes and then just fast forward it during halftime to get back to the live action. Of I skip through the commercials to get caught up.

I started to write baseball off when players claimed they were nothing but slaves. That mentality wears real thin on me. Now the college football players have come to about the same place. I don't mind them making some money, even a lot of money in some cases, but I don't like the way the sport is going when boosters go buy a squad. Hell, at least pro football has a salary cap. :tsk:

Yeah, the NIL is going to be interesting. I have a feeling not much will change once everyone is on equal standing with what they can and can't do. Those who paid the most before will do so now, just legally.

I'm with you on MLB, that I love. Millionaires arguing with Billionaires doesn't move the needle for me. I just want baseball and can see both sides as being wrong. As a fan, I just want some baseball.
