Pac 12 Also moving away from divisions?

My guess is everyone is going to be moving in this direction moving forward
All driven by TV inventory and fan interest, which is good. Will be interesting if the SEC and the ACC go to 9 IC games. I am pretty sure the SEC will even if means a few of the low end teams won't go bowling as often.

i dont much worry about the years before i can remember either. current. is 40 years current to you?
Again, what current success are you talking about? Or are you saying that Oregon has been successful the last 40 years?

Nebraska was great back in the 90s. Sad to see how irrelevant they've become the past decade.

The SEC with 16 teams could do 3 permanent “rivals” and rotating the other 12 team 6 and 6. Makes the most sense and you play everyone every other year.

Well, it's official now:

ESPN: Pac-12 scraps divisions after NCAA Division I Council votes to eliminate requirements for FBS conference title games.

the announcement is that there wont be north and south winner in the championship game for 22. they are keeping schedules as they are for 22 but will be reevaluating for coming years.

I'm surprised they're doing it this year since the schedules were based off the divisions. However, I still support the move and expect other conferences to follow suit within the next few seasons.

This is probably a good move for the Pac12. The only issue is that you might have the possibility of a rematch in the title game of a game that occurred the week before the title game.

Could happen. But is that any worse than having a 6-6 team win a weak "division" and get to play in the CCG?

I imagine the Big12 has to be feeling like this these days.

FIFY

that only happened on a sanction to USC

Didn’t UCLA play in the CCG with such a record about 10 years ago?
yes as a i said because of sanctions.

No. 6 USC 72 102
UCLA xy 54 68
Utah 45 85
Arizona State 45 67
Arizona 27 48
Colorado 27 310
Championship: Oregon 49, UCLA 31

  • y – Championship game participant
  • † – USC ineligible for championship and post-season due to NCAA sanctions

8-4 USC in 2015 was the participant with the worst record without any * in the Pac 12

ACC had 6-6 GT

Wasn't Ricky boy the coach of that UCLA team?

DIVIDED NO MORE: The Pac-12 Conference currently has two divisions in football — North and South. They’re comprised of six teams each and the winner of the division gets a berth to the conference title game in Las Vegas.

The NCAA Football Oversight Committee recently recommended removing the requirements for a conference to have a championship game. It’s expected to pass later this month and would allow conferences to decide for themselves how to set up their title game and crown their champion.

Also, there’s the potential for the College Football Playoff itself to expand to 12 teams.

The prevailing sentiment is that the divisions will eventually be eliminated by the Pac-12. That could come as soon as the 2023 season, per Jon Wilner. The conference desperately needs a playoff team. There’s a clear “invest in football” directive coming from conference headquarters. Beyond that, the conference is wise to think about the ways in which it might help itself with scheduling and strategy.

Removing the divisions could potentially avoid a mediocre team upsetting the conference favorite in the title game. More likely, though, what it would create is an opportunity for the team with the best record in the conference to have a shot to get one more quality win against a ranked opponent in front of the selection committee.

I don't see this as them moving away from divisions. I think it's about having the best 2 teams in the CCG.

They don't want another 2011 when 11-2 Oregon played 6-6 UCLA because the team that won the South (USC), was ineligible. Meanwhile, 11-2 Stanford was sitting at home.

I would think that most years it will still be the 2 division champs...this seems more like a hedge against a division being down or 1 of the division champs is ineligible.

What's crazy is that Utah had an opportunity to play in the first ever PAC 12 Championship but lost at home to a bad Colorado team in the last week of the season

im betting we see
PNW: Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State
Cali: Cal Stanford, UCLA, USC
DesMount: Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Utah

play 3 in your pod, play 3 from each other pod.
keep California happy, they play all California schools every year.
make sure other 8 play at in California at least 1 time each season for recruiting.
rotate schools either every 2 years for home and away purposes or every year but make sure as they call off and on they get home and away.

Maybe. Seems unnecessary though. The current scheduling has been fine.

Most years it would be the division champs in the ccg. They just needed a way to make sure the 2 best teams are in the ccg so that the ccg doesn't end up hurting the conference champs shot at the cfp.

Changing it to allow the teams with the best records into the ccg regardless of division, accomplishes that.
