CHICAGO -- Eric Hosmer arrived to Cubs Convention this weekend as the Cubs' new veteran first baseman, sporting a sharp Cubbie blue blazer. Prospect Matt Mervis made his way around the Sheraton Grand Chicago, where fans lined up to get the autograph of the first baseman of the future. And
that seems like a stretch. Arraez is a nice player, but he isn't without his flaws. Arraez is a great contact hitter, but his OBPs are more good than great and there's no power. He's not a particularly good defender and his bat loses some value if he's playing mostly 1st base (and the Twins already have plenty of middle infielders, especially with Correa returning). Twins needed starting pitching and they're getting a solid middle rotation starter with two years of team control (Arraez has 3), plus two prospects. Marlins do need a lot of bats, and Arraez does represent a sizable upgrade over anyone not named Jazz Chisholm from the 2022 team (and he'll be moving to the outfield). Arraez should help, but that lineup still looks pretty bad. Their pitching should still be good even without Lopez, but they may not get enough run support.
