2022/23 PAC-12 Power Rankings

Whoever gets the #4 spot in the playoffs is probably going to get blasted. There are 3 teams who are truly playoff ready.,,Georgia, Bama and tOSU.

Hopefully, with NIL and the transfer portal, that will expand soon...but for now, that's how it is.

Problem with the transfer portal is that a lot of the top guys will just end up at the already dominant schools. I don't think it really levels the playing field more than it hurts the lower schools.

You think?

Arizona is miles better this year because of the transfer portal, as I know some other schools are too.

I think it'll help level it out a bit.

It's not really jumping average-mediocre programs into the upper level though. Yes Arizona and a few other teams might improve off it, but its not enough to be consequential in the grand scheme.

Depends on the school and the coach, imo.

USC, for example, was able to fix one side of the ball and improve the other side fairly significantly in 1 off-season by using the portal. Most of the guys leading the team in various statistical categories are players they got from the portal

It hasn't gotten them to the level of Bama, Georgia and tOSU...but they're closer than they have been in years.

Also, it depends on how they use it. For example, Lincoln Riley has said that he doesn't expect to use the portal as much in the future but will definitely use it to fill holes.

A player is unlikely to choose, for example, Bama if Bama is already strong at that position. In fact, Bama isn't even likely to be trying to get him from the portal if they're strong at that position.

Recruiting is still going to be the life blood of college football, but a team that has recruited well and has gotten close to the top programs can potentially fill holes in the roster with some players who can put them at that level.

It really hurts the G5 - not that a lot of people care

There are quite a few more truly awful teams than normal due to teams getting completely gutted by the portal.

And assuming that translates to wins, better recruits will be more willing to consider them going forward, as will some of the better portal players.

I mean we are on the path to be the new big boy of the PAC in football.

Agree. It definitely hurts the G5's and lowest tier P5's because they are likely to lose better players to the portal than they get back. It sucks, but I'm not sure what can be done about that short of getting rid of the portal. Maybe limit the number of times a player can use it?

I know Bru McCoy has used it like 3 times. That seems excessive.

I thought they could only transfer once without having to sit out a year? Or did they change that?

Bru just twice right? USC and UT?

I know Bru McCoy has used it 3 times. Not sure that he's ever had to sit for a year. He started at USC, went to Texas, then back to USC and he's now at Tennessee.

Did you mean take him too literally? Because I don't think anyone on the site takes him seriously. Like ever. It's just fun to trade shots with him.

Probably be fun to trade shots while drinking shots with him too, although I'm not sure about the quality of the shots at Applebee's. :noidea:

I’m down to take shots at Applebees with y’all. Not really my scene but they got the unlimited boneless wings now

But even here you are being a hypocrite. Analytics have been shown time and time again that 'big game' after 'big game' in consecutive weeks shows a steep decline in the second game.

Say what you want, but you were down by more than 2 scores with less than 4 minutes left. ESPN had Wazzu at a 99% chance of winning late into the game. You were lucky, and if you don't think having to score 29 points in the 4th quarter to barely win 3 involves luck, then I'm not sure what else to tell you.

funny how Oregon doesn’t get the BYU excuse for the Wazzu game. Then again, they didn’t need one

@OregonDucks

You hear about this nonsense yet?

Oregon OC blames LeBron James for college football 'superteams' / fox sports

Damn that's funny.

Washington State wasn't ranked, but obviously they are still a good team.

I've mentioned this in other threads, but I don't think I'll understand Oregon for another 2 weeks. Part of that is we just never know what Bo Nix is going to show up. The one against BYU or UGA? And yes, the difference between those two teams in terms of defensive talent is massive, but Bo Nix was off/on weekly at Auburn too, and this just isn't a sport where you can excel at with a bad QB.

If Bo plays like a top 3 QB in the PAC, then Oregon might win the PAC. I'm just not sure he can do that consistently.

Oregon doesn't get that excuse because they are supposed to be a top level P5 program and being able to handle back to back high level opponents is part of that.

It's the same reason USC doesn't get to use the "we play our biggest rivals back to back every other season" excuse. They're supposed to be good enough to handle it.

A team like BYU, while certainly a decent team, isn't expected to be able to handle top opponents back to back because they aren't a top level program.

Depth is an important aspect in football. The better programs have it and the others don’t.

Not sure why that factor is only being used to dismiss certain wins
