2024 College Football TV Ratings

Yes, I'm sure the networks that didn't want to pay the staggering amount that ESPN did will be lining up to take it off their hands!
ESPN is exclusive with it now. Your acting like it's some crazy idea networks will split cost to have some of these games instead of one network having it all.

First, Bama/PSU isn't getting 20 million viewers, especially up against the NFL.

Second, if you go to 14, and the top 2 receive a bye, while still having the top 5 conferences get an AQ, these are the matchups:

#3 Texas vs. #14 Clemson
#4 Penn State vs. #13 Miami
#5 Notre Dame vs. #12 Arizona State
#6 Ohio State vs. #11 Alabama
#7 Tennessee vs. #10 SMU
#8 Indiana vs. #9 Boise State

Obviously OSU vs. Bama would do great. But none of those games jump off the screen saying ratings bonanza. That's my point, the additional matchups in the 1st round, aren't going to produce amazing ratings.

You're right, I don't know if and how much ESPN is losing. I am assuming they were worried about it because they sublicensed all those games to TNT to recoup the amount they paid to broadcast them.
PSU/Bama is getting much more than PSU/SMU. This year with so many major brands having 3+ it won't produce amazing ratings. But if it's put in to give more autos to the P2 (right or not) you are going to start seeing more major brands facing off or much more intriguing matchups then what we have now. More than one network will be interested in those numbers.

I'm genuinely asking, what viewer number does ESPN need to break even on each game? Does anyone know?

And ESPN paid a premium to be exclusive.

You continue to be delusional.

For FY 2022, ESPN had a total of 4 billion in Ad revenue. That's for EVERYTHING in a year, with a good chunk of the revenue coming from MNF broadcasts.

And ESPN paid a premium to be exclusive.

You continue to be delusional.
So there wouldn't be a premium paid if multiple networks were in on this you stupid son of a bitch. More options means people pay less each. Please start understanding the convo.

The contract is already set, and ESPN paid a premium price. You think the CFP is going to take less money?

LOL

Again, what is the break even point for ESPN from viewership of these games? Yes games like PSU/SMU won't cut the mustard but huge games like Jan 1st could.

If you split each game evenly, the breakeven point is a little over 100 million dollars in ad revenue (without taking into account production costs). Unfortunately we know the first round games aren't going to come anywhere close to that, meaning that the RB has to rake in at least 175 million.

What is the viewership to break even? Thats what I continue to ask if anyone knows. Network(s) will need viewership numbers to charge that $100 million, what is it per game???

If you're asking what the sliding scale for ESPN's ad rates are, that's proprietary information.

Agreed. @WhosYourDawggy is looking at it just as a game, and not "the Rose Bowl"

Kind of a dolt take on his part.
A smart take, that could be wrong. It’s not just the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl …. it’s the CFP and people are going to watch for that value. UGA had better numbers than anyone this year. And ND has a huge following jumping on the bandwagon. It’s very reasonable to think they will outdraw a game with Oregon in it … tOSU will drive eyeballs, Oregon hasn’t shown they can do that. Both games on ESPN, afternoon v. night could favor Rose. Not sure if there is NFL competition.

Are you always a douchebag, or just here on the Hoop?

I'm unconvinced that South Carolina @ Notre Dame is a better draw than Indiana @ Notre Dame
BTW, ESPN pays the same amount for 12 or 14, per their agreement. Those are the only 2 formats available during this contract. The 2 additional round 1 games would drive local money. I saw a report that the game at tOSU drove $40 million in value to the business community. Plus gate, concessions, etc.

It's the Rose Bowl. Don't think too hard about it.

Isn’t the Oregon/OSU the most viewed Championship game?????

I loathe the Rose Bowl due to them refusing to join the Bowl Alliance and Bowl Coalition. However, even I can admit it's the Granddaddy Of Them All.

Even it's parade outshines all others.

It's not a smart take. There is no evidence to suggest the Sugar Bowl will get better ratings than the Rose Bowl. The only time the Sugar Bowl outdrew the Rose Bowl was when it was either a CFP semi or BCS title game and the Rose was a NY6. Also, Oregon and Ohio State played in the 2nd most watched game since 1998. You can say it's because of OSU, but the number is still the number.

Look I'm even an ND fan and I know this won't be much of a contest.

No. UGA v Texas drew more
