2024 Natty discussion: tOSU vs ND

Texas was the best zone heavy pass defense in the country. Did a great job dropping LBs and Linemen back into coverage and keeping everything in front of the safeties basically all game.

ND is the best man coverage pass defense in the country. Do a lot of Cover 1, so we should see a lot more man-to-man matchups with Smith and Egbuka. Potential for more big plays, but their secondary is elite.

Whichever team wins in the trenches will win, as always.
ND doesn't put up great sack numbers, and their sack leader is out, but I could see them targeting the right side with Fryar's ankle being fucked and Tshabola sucking ass. That said, I wonder if we'll see the jailbreak screen to the right again a la Texas.

Honestly I think this game comes down to OSU playing a clean game like Tennessee or Oregon. Limit the penalties (the biggest issue for us against Texas), win or tie the TO battle, and keep Leonard spied on all passing downs. Let the offense do what they can do. ND has a top 10 defense both total and scoring. So did Indiana, Texas, Penn State, and Tennessee. Stick to the gameplan and play physical like you have all postseason.

Hopefully we got all of the stupid out against Texas.

The 15 yarder on Henderson and the other dumbass 15 yarder after a big play later in the game when the offense had been struggling both easily coulda been game flipping penalties, you probably don't get lucky two games in a row surviving stupidity

A lot of the schemes Ohio State does works better vs man than they do zone. We do a lot of bunch stacks with bubble screens, motion, or crossing routes. And frankly, its just harder to pass against zone than it is man coverage in college where the QBs aren't generally great at going through their progressions or recognizing coverage.

If Ohio State can run the ball, I think ND is in deep shit because they'll have to start bringing guys up into the box. Then #4 and #2 will eat bigly.

No doubt stupid penalties need to be cleaned up. Hopefully got all that out of their systems friday.

Please no runs up the middle with Henderson on 1st down. At one point vs Texas we did it in 3 straight series for a grand total of ZERO yards. It never works, just a waste of a down basically.

ND's run defense vs gap blocking isn't good. We may see a lot of that. Giving up 5 ypc.

Day's comments about the screen were hilarious. "We practice that screen every day. I told the coaches to stop practicing it because we never run it."

Hmm, maybe they are on to something.

To be fair, its not that often that a defense brings 4 and then drops everyone else back 25 yards. Letting the big boys get a full head of steam is a tough strategy vs a screen.

I want to say we had like 5 drives get killed for idiotic penalties. Can't have that happen and expect to win most of the time.

We certainly fare better against man coverage for obvious reasons. ND will be right up there with the best secondaries we've faced, it's just going to be a matter of winning the 1 on 1 battles and having that open up the run game. If we can hit on a downfield shot or two, it will be very difficult for ND to keep up.

The 2 beyond stupid personal fouls that had nothing to do with the play in the grand scheme and were just unnecessary stupidity by our players after the play absolutely cannot happen again.

A false start and a holding were the other 2, those things happen in games but yea we gotta keep that to a minimum. Both of those were pretty much drive killing penalties.

False Starts and Holdings might be "easier" to overcome against a man to man team like Notre Dame though. Texas zone schemes made it near impossible for us to hit anything deepish, it's harder to overcome 2nd and 15, 2nd and 20 type situations when that's going on.

7th ranked portal class is “meh”?

“Meh” is Ohio state at #23

Michigan has also taken 13 players compared to 6 for Ohio State so far. The only portal guy Michigan has gotten who I maybe might call a impact player is Haynes. The rest is a big group of meh.

Remember when y'all said you were going to get any WRs you wanted there? Lol. THe #264 and #40 Portal WRs according to on3. Huge coups.

The sites don’t seem to agree on your evaluation. The OL and DL pickups we got are especially great adds and will likely provide immediate impacts. Not as flashy as Hayne but super good prospects.

That said, the transfer portal is always going to be harder for us because of UMs bad transfer rules. That’s been biting us for decades.

and I did not say that about WRs. WR this year was going to be hard given most transfers have a year or so left and probably don’t want to come be thrown to by a true freshman in an offense that historically hasn’t thrown the ball. That said, the Indiana kid is a pretty good get. We just need solid hands and some height. We got that.

A couple good WRs in the 2024 class and a couple good WRs in the 2025 class, and we should be ok.

OL from Cal Poly and Ferris State i'm always questionable on dudes from smaller schools in the portal, especially non FBS schools. It's probably 50/50 if they actually adjust well enough to make a impact at the P4 level. I'm even skeptical on the OL from Rice we got, he's pretty highly regarded by most of the services, but it's still a big jump to make from Rice to high level P4 ball.

I think the DL are mostly rotational type gets for Michigan. Both dudes carried the classic "THEY WERE RATED SO HIGH IN HS YEARS AGO!" line because they've been pretty underwhelming in college so far. Depth is fine though, Michigan does need it (especially bigger bodies) on the DL.

Most portal prospects have something questionable about them. That’s why they’re portal prospects.

This portal class is underwhelming overall as a whole compared to last year. I expect this to be more of the norm unless it's a year where there are coaching changes at a couple of major programs that cause mass exodus amongst players there.

This is very frequently not the case
There’s maybe a handful of kids in every class where it’s not the case. Hell. This is the top 10. Are you even familiar with most of them? I’m not. IMG_2596.jpegIMG_2597.jpeg

I think the major difference is that there doesn’t seem to be many big names bolting around. Last year there were a few prospects that big teams were fighting forks Cam Ward. Biggest name this year might be Carson Beck? But there was mass change at huge programs last year too. 3/4 of the playoff teams last year lost their coach at the end of the
