GAME #23 U$C @ #13 LSU 6:30c ABC

I started by thinking LSU was going to run USC out of the building.

In the middle, I thought "these teams must not be very good."

Now, I think they both are pretty good. Good game. Hated the penalty at the end, but it was targeting according to the rule.

I wonder if the td run was a surprise to LSU. I thought USC was just going to center the ball for the kick.

Thought the same thing. LSU was running the ball very physically early on and I thought that would eventually wear on USC. It was a good game.

Perhaps LSU should consider an easier game out of the gate.

Coaching not talent is costing LSU these games and that is pretty obvious.

Yeah but it sure is nice watching these competitive OOC games instead of slaughters. :yo: to those willing to play such.
I agree, but it’s just a fact that all teams improve the most between games 1 and 2.

USC's defense came along quick in the offseason. They are definitely a contender in the B1G and the CFP, especially if the offense progresses.

A fun one for Brian Kelly haters.

I read that he's catching a lot of heat for that. I don't see what he said that was so bad. He clearly put the blame on himself, stating several times that he has to do a better job.

I will say though, teams take on the personality of their HC and when he is undisciplined with his meltdowns and constantly yelling at the refs, etc. he shouldn't be surprised when his team is undisciplined.

It's really a shame LSU has Brian Kelly as a head coach. Makes them so unlikeable

Defense definitely looks better than any Riley team I can recall. While these two teams are definitely pretty even, I was trying to figure out just how good they are. Pretty good even or real good even. I guess time will tell. Overall I think both looked pretty good for the opener.

I'd said in the offseason I expected USC's defense to take a big step forward based on what Lynn was able to do at UCLA last year, and last night was a really solid start. I know LSU lost a lot but they always have horses on offense, and USC did a good job of keeping them relatively in check. To tell someone 6 months ago that USC was going to hold LSU to 20 points, I'd imagine they would've called you an idiot or a USC homer, but they're legit, I so also think LSU will be a really solid team this year. Maybe not contending for the SEC but I think 9-3 is realistic.

You called it. I never thought I'd see a Lincoln Riley team with a good defense. I know we can't crown them a great defense after just one game. Not knowing how good LSU's offense is yet makes it also difficult to judge. But they damn sure look a hell of a lot better defensively than they have in the past. And they played a talented team, not a cupcake which could have made them look good in and of itself.

Mike Leach is probably rolling over in his grave at only 27 points though!

For sure, USC still has a ways to go to fully be thought of as one of the nation's best, but I feel like that 2023 USC defense would've given up at least 35+ last night to LSU. The tackling was crisp and they played with confidence, which was the opposite of last year. Outside of Penn State, they likely won't have a huge test until ND at the end of the year, unless Nebraska actually has turned the corner.

Now the question will be if they can make up enough momentum to possibly flip back some of the big defensive prospects for the 2025 class that they lost.
