Nervous (as usual) about this one in hostile territory with a buncha new guise, including a new QB starter transfer from Wisky in Coan.

I seem to recall some pretty mixed reviews from Badger fans on Coan.

What say you ... @Kburjr @Moab @Smart ??? I only saw the guy a couple of times and didn't really get an impression.

Coan to me was OK but somewhat mechanical. A good game manager but no inventiveness. Also, inconsistent. Could look all-world at times throwing, sometimes couldn't hit the stadium.

If he didn't get hurt, I don't think Mertz would've beat him out as the starter. I also don't recall him making the back breaking mistakes, I wouldn't expect any miracle plays, but I would expect a nice steady performance.

As the other two Wisconsin fans said, in 2019, he was the definition of a solid game manager. He didn't throw people open, but he could hit just about any open player within 20 yards. He rarely made poor decisions and he rarely took risks. If anything, he was too conservative. His best throws are underneath dumps where he can fit it in tightly. He is worst out towards the sidelines. He is not mobile per se, but he is gritty and tough and isn't afraid to get hit to make a big play.

He was a very good quarterback for Jonathan Taylor's offense. The only team that outplayed us in 2019 was Ohio State, and we were a couple of inopportune fumbles away from going 12-2 on the year with both losses that to that juggernaut. He's not going to win you games, but if Kyren Williams is the player you think he is and the defense is what you expect, Coan will not lose you games.

I need this game tonight. I need to watch a game that I am emotionally uninviested in and just enjoy the game for the game.

Because I can't deal with the memory of the inept hapless Chinese fire drill of GT football right now.

Ut oh to the bold.

ND was used to Ian Book's elusiveness and he extended ALOT of plays for the Irish. Our WR corps is kinda suspect and if opposing D's key on Kyren Williams our O could really struggle w/o a mobile QB who is prolly still learning this offense. I hope Tommy Rees doesn't put too much on Coan.

He's not a statue and will buy time with his legs when he needs to. He will run as a last resort, but I wouldn't be too worried about it, he's more athletic than given credit for.

You can see some film of him on youtube...just go watch a few of the 2019 games and highlights. He made plays when he needed and didn't give games away

A little trivia for you is Coan's original D1 scholarship was to Notre Dame as a lacrosse player. When UW offered him in football as a QB he rescinded his ND offer.

Honestly, I really think the UW coached F'ed up by not allowing him to compete for the starting job. They told him Mertz was the starter and he could be the backup. He didn't bitch and moan or make a scene, he just did the intelligent thing, kept his mouth shut and told them thanks but I'll transfer. You guys got a good one...trust me. The only QB that UW has had in my adult life that was better, IMO is Wilson. He might not be spectacular at anything, but he is steady and makes the right plays way more often than not. I'd take that to lead a team. I don't believe they lose the game yesterday if he's the QB. Unfortunately, dumb fucks that see "stars" and ratings and whatnot actually believe those over results on the field. In this case, I think the UW coaches are going to look foolish when this season is over. Maybe they'll learn a lesson...nobody is to old to learn, right?

Don't worry about him, worry about other parts, but not him.

I’ve heard Rees has installed more RB passing plays. Hopefully can create mismatches with their LB’s.

FSU's got some great names at QB. Chubba Purdy, Gino English...

I'm guessing the Seminoles will be unhappy at the end of this game.
