Phillips told ESPN’s Andrea Adelson that he plans to discuss potential changes to the conference’s championship game format with his coaches and athletic directors during their upcoming winter meetings.

Among the proposals is a plan that would keep the league’s regular-season champion on the sideline watching while teams that finished 2nd and 3rd in the standings play for the “title.”

Seriously.

“Whoever wins the regular season, just park them to the side and then you play the 2nd-place team versus the 3rd-place team in your championship game,” Phillips said, presumably with a straight face. “So you have a regular-season champion and then you have a conference tournament or postseason championship.”

Phillips is trying to ensure he doesn't knock his best team out of the playoff and give the 2nd best team a better shot of making it, but everyone will see this for what it is and discount both his best and 2nd team when ranking them. It was a creative idea but that ship doesn't sail.

I feel like this is in the same spirit as what the B12 tried when they refused to name a champion between TCU and Baylor in 2014

If they actually do this the CFP should not allow the ACC to have more than 1 team until they put the 1st place team back into the CCG. Don't let them basically manufacture a extra playoff team shit would be a joke.
The NCAA should disqualify their game as a conference championship and not allow it but they won't have the balls but lets face it this is such a stupid idea it will never happen regardless.

ACC will do this then the Big 12 will sit their 1st and 2nd place teams and have the 3rd and 4th place team play some exhibition game instead.

Only problem with that is the Notre Dame situation. They didn’t and never have played in one.

I may be wrong but the NCAA has zero to say about the CFP.

Now that I think about it, the NCAA is now toothless aren’t they?

The ratings for that game would be terrible no one would watch out of protest.

NCAA sets the rules for championship games. For example you have to have like 8 teams to be eligible to hold one so there is no reason they can't initiate a rule that it has to be the top 2 teams. Its the NCAA that grants permission for an additional game to be added.

8 team playoff.

B12, SEC, ACC and B10. Each plays a conference game with an auto bid into a 4 team playoff. The end. It creates a functional 8 team playoff where the top 2 teams in each conference, determined by the conference, get a shot at the auto bid to a 4 team.

unless the CCG's produce an auto bid into the system, we're going to see more and more teams NOT want to play it in.

Antitrust lawsuits incoming.

"Among the proposals"

This stupid idea will never pass. Doubt it even gets to a vote.

Everyone get their fake outrage out and let's move on :yawning:

Well, either this has to be more limited or it's going to be stupid. Can't have it both ways.

Limited like how? The number of teams? There is zero chance they reduce from 12 now that they got there.

Especially looking at the four semifinalists from this season would not have made it into your model

Their conference is so weak and they know it. Yikes

Oh I know. But that's what should be done. ND would probably have to join a conference in my system as well, which I doubt is happening any time soon.

I hold no weight in that because they gave two very undeserving teams byes in the current model while implementing a system that makes ND incapable of achieving one.

Taking this year, assuming that ND joined the ACC and won it this season, it would have been UGA, Oregon, ND and ASU.

And the actual start of the playoff would have been championship games:

ASU vs Iowa State
Oregon vs. Penn State
Texas vs. Georgia
ND vs. Clemson

ND isn't in a conference. Your model would have been Clemson/UGA/ASU/Oregon.

That list includes team ranked from 1-16 in the final CFP rankings and leaves out 3-11 and 13-15. That is absolutely an awful playoff set up.
