good stuff!

Wife’s cousin died last night of COVID. 52 years old with a four year old son. Gonna be a shitty day.
sorry to hear that, man

your family is in my thoughts

a friend of mine's grandfather is against the ropes with it right now in the hospital...I can't imagine them not being able to go in and see him...nor him being in there alone

This HoF shit gets me fired up again. We’ve gone around on this debate a few times the last few weeks….even getting called into the meltdown thread, though I thought that was debatable.

Years ago I was in the “fuck Bonds, Clemens, etc” club. I’ve since matured. I’m not upset that Papi got in, I think he’s deserving. Just not quite as deserving as guys being held out.

Another one I read about today….Scott Rolen. Frankly, he’s got metrics and eye test as a HoF guy. But he’s struggling with the threshold, possibly (likely) because he never was a guy that ingratiated himself to a team, and hence their media.

It all just rings again (I’m a broken record)….it’s time for the archaic process of journalists voting in players to end. It was given to them forever ago to help ensure positive press or the game. And they don’t even hold up their end anymore. Combine that with 4 ballots now have been sent back blank…and that alone should make the case that these fuckers should have no say.

If you send a blank vote in you should be removed from voting

I’m for tightening the voting process but I think it should include writers. There’s lots of rules about WHICH writers get ballots and which don’t. I don’t know them all but one of them is if you have a vote and retire as a writer you get to keep your vote for ten more years. Why? If you’re no longer a writer then you should no longer get a vote.

I think all votes should be public. The majority of voters who keep people out do so anonymously. That’s BS IMO. They aren’t voting for political office (which should be private). It’s just the HOF. Own your decision.

I also think living members of the HOF should get a vote. Some would keep people out (ie Joe Morgan) while others would let people in (ie Frank Thomas). This would give voting power to people other than just sports writers. This group would be deserving of that “honor”.

I’d be open to other changes as well.
I’m not even speaking on changes at this point. But, I like some of these ideas. It’s fair to say there are still some writers who take the process and vote seriously.

I guess if I take a stab at solutions I imagine some committee of former players and managers and dependable writers working to settle elections. I could live with that.

I want it to be public votes, because transparency is good. But, in this fucked over reactionary Twitter world that can be a lot of fucking noise.

Ultimately, what I think should be fixed is not what’s keeping PED guys out (that will resolve in time). What should be fixed is holding a guy out who was never perfectly warm with the media. Bonds and Clemens fit that as much as the PED issue. I also mentioned an example like Rolen today. As much as I don’t like him….Schilling too.

I’m not interested in seeing guys held out because they didn’t cow tow to the media any longer.

Been up all night dealing with some issues regarding my godson who lives in Australia. His dad was a childhood buddy of mine from Boston so when his son was born I was named his godfather. Several years ago my buddy moved to Australia obviously taking his family with him. Since then my buddy has gotten hooked on drugs and been in/out of rehab. My godson and I have gotten closer during this time but him being on the other side of that world makes dealing with problems tough. He needs his dad who’s he’s not around/reliable. Just trying to be there for him. Great kid
What a fucking mess man. Good of you to keep close with the God son. You’re right….he needs his dad. In absence of that having you connected with him is likely a huge help!

How old is the kid?

Hopefully the shitty Gophers basketball team doesn't want to relive this tomorrow. One of the all time Bush league moves in sports history

thanks. Early 20s but he’s been dealing with his dads issues for a long time. It’s had an effect on him. It’s been an ongoing thing for the two of us to deal with for a long time. Him not having stability at home has been a big thing. Add in living in a foreign country halfway around the world and… well… you get it.

welp.. Back in the office 2 days/week starting Monday

i don’t buy that this is why they are “out”. Guys like Steve Carlton never spoke to the press yet he got in. Also, these are the same writers who voted for bonds for multiple MVPs. They certainly didn’t make it personal there.

I just think that there exists these character type criteria that some writers give more emphasis than other writers do. That may change over time (most things do) but right now they’ve been pretty consistent in keeping PED users where there’s no doubt that they used out. IMO that’s why they are out… not their personalities.

It’s funny watching all the backlash this morning. I bet there would be similar backlash the other way if Bonds and Clemens got in… just from a different group of people.

Oh yeah…I get it. My girls are almost 22 and 20. They never had the greatest mother. But she’s been completely absent for years. Good for me….but I’ve been seeing more and more how it’s not good for them.

That lack of parental presence and engagement has impacts that can shape an adult lifetime in warped ways. Luckily they have a step mother now who is a million times more of a mother to them than they ever had. And it’s been a huge impact watching how they are taking off and maturing.

That’s where my comment came in….in such a vacuum having you engaged with him is huge.

Props to you, brother.
