Aftermath of Hall of Fame Wednesday

i won’t deny that there is an element of it being a popularity contest and that some writers hold ridiculous grudges (ie I heard Rob Parker going off that bonds didn’t get in but he admitted he didn’t vote for oritz. Haha. That dude hates Boston sports). I just think after ten attempts the writers spoke pretty soundly that this is an issue for a significant portion of them. Significant enough to deny entry and again they’ve been pretty consistent (McGuire, Sosa, etc) were also denied entry.

The fact is if it’s strictly stats then you don’t need voters. You just set criteria and if you hit those numbers (in whatever combinations you set) you’re in. If you don’t… you’re out. Personally, I think baseball (and other sports) run into problems if character issues aren’t considered. For example, take Omar vizquel. He’s been pretty close but now he has these sexual harassment charges pending. If he gets in a bad look for the sport. Similarly, if a sexual deviant has great numbers gets in that’s also a bad look. Those are easy examples of where to draw the line. This PED issue is a harder one. MOST say it’s ok (60% said bonds and Clemens should get in). That’s more than half… but not enough to get in.
And this plays into the solutions I have in mind. Yes, it should be stars more than character, but there needs to be some consideration for character that I wouldn’t trust an algorithm to do.

And by character I mean an example like Vizquel. We can debate later if accusations should matter or how much. Character doesn’t mean “how well I worked with the media”.

Get some good writers with some former players and managers and sit down every year and hash it out. Then take votes and induct.

I keep going back to genesis of why this is the way it is. Writers were given this plum to play ball (pun) on player behavior. But, the fuckers don’t play ball anymore. You just can’t anymore. That’s not the media’s fault….but it still should disqualify them from this plum they were given way back when.

What do they do? Bash a game that’s been going downhill anyway?

talking about the HOF

there are other threads discussing it
Ok. Fine. It’s a daily thread. It’s also a daily thread with this as the title.

Luckily I’ve said what I have to say today. Let’s get back to how @ill did at trivia last night and wishing it were Friday.
