Alvin Kamara - has he been figured out?

this stood out to me. catches and yards by season (hes mostly a threat as a receiver IMO, tho his rushing numbers are ok the last 2 years):

100 targets/81 catches/826 yards/10.2 per/5 TD
105 targets/81 catches/709 yards/8.8 per/4 TD
97 targets/81 catches/533 yards/6.6 per/1 TD

81 catches on the nose every year, but hes lost 3.6 yards per reception (same 81 catches) since his rookie year.

compare him to another pass catching back, james white (last 3 years)

72 targets/56 catches/429 yards/7.7 per/3 TD
123 targets/87 catches/751 yards/8.6 per/7 TD
95 targets/72 catches/645 yards/9.0 per/5 TD
 
Could be he is keyed in on better by defenses. Could also be guys that sprung blocks for him three years ago weren’t there (or the same quality blocker) last year.

Numbers are telling, no doubt. Reasons can be multi faceted.
 
He also went from being a change of pace back to being more of the primary RB, so that changes the complexion of his touches. There's definitely something to figuring out how to take away some of his home run plays as they got tape on him, but I think him taking over for Ingram has something to do with the drop in YPC.

well, no ingram to share the load and keep defenses honest too

but that stood out to me. same opportunities (81) much less production.

Again, quantity /= quality. I'd really have to go looking at the snaps and stuff, but they may have really been able to use Ingram to create personnel mismatches and then formations/motion to get the matchups they wanted in terms of isolating him on an LB. And then, possibly him being rotated off the field for rest because he's the #1 might have limited his availability for similar situations that they used him for big plays as a rookie.
 
And also he has Drew Brees who starts every game with a fastball but is throwing junk after half time.
 
He wasn't a feature back at Tennessee necessarily either. Hurd was.


When you aren't the focus of an opposing defense, it's easier to excel. He's not just getting an OLB or a safety in the flats, he gets both.

Kamara's targets are less explosive yardage wise now, more a part of the aerial running game, but look at Michael Thomas catch percentages. That's not his hands getting better.
 
When I say aerial running game, I mean the intent of the play.

His YAC dropped last year, but it's only half of his drop in yardage. He caught balls closer to the line last year. By over a yard less than in '18.
