Maybe if it floats around for a couple years and washes ashore into your dock. That seem fair.

Google says yes. If the crew has abandoned a shipwreck and given up trying to save/salvage, its up for grabs.

I think the carrier has to declare the ship a total loss, or it has to be in a state where it's abandoned (whatever the legal definition of that is), before the salvager can keep 100% of the ship & contents.
