Arch Manning news ...

Has anyone else said how terrible of a name Arch is? He is doomed to fail just from that.

You "Dingbat", "Meathead".......................

I don't know how I'd feel about a recruit named "Dingbat" but anyone called "Meathead" sounds like at least a 4 star to me without even seeing tape :noidea:

I know this is going to seem like sour grapes, but it's not. We didn't get Manning, we will be fine.

Prior to not getting Manning, I questioned the "pied piper" effect that he would have no matter where he went. I asked on a UGA board for anyone to name a player that was genuinely a pied piper. The top player mentioned was Justin Fields. 2018 was our first no. 1 class, and it was the third best all time, even after ATM last year. But we really couldn't point to that many players that came to UGA just because of Fields. Most were already leaning toward UGA and that just cemented their choice.

So, what about Manning? Did he really pull all that many good players to Texas? I'll let @Thiefery provide more depth and context as he knows way more about Texas recruiting than I do. But let's recall that Texas was already able to recruit well:

Per the 247 Composite:

2023 - est. top 5
2022 - 5th
2021- 15th
2020 - 9th
2019 - 3rd
2018 - 3rd

With that in mind, this is what has happened since Manning committed (I've included his HS teammate as that seems the most pied piper player of them all):

The average player is ranked 355th, with a .9127. I am less critical of OL evals, as they are really hard to do and lots of OL that are in the 300 and 400s often turn out to be quite good after several years in the system. And they have signed 5 of those. Of the 3 top 100 players, 2 are on the D ... did they come to Texas because of Manning? That doesn't seem to be very "pied piper-ish" to me. While there are lots of teams that would kill for 13 players in the top 750, we expect higher of Texas especially if Manning has the tails everyone is talking about.

As a point of comparison, it was between UGA and TX for Manning. We lost fair and square. How have we done since Manning went to Texas? Not listed in the chart below, we signed two 2024 players both of whom are receivers - a TE and WR. They are ranked 26th and 53rd. It's obviously early, they could drop, and they might not end up at UGA. But both are homegrown Georgia boys, so I feel good in saying that not landing Manning won't hurt next year. 5 are on the D so we can argue Manning wouldn't have affected that. But we seem to have survived not singing Manning. I also do think we might have signed a better WR class - our TE class is awesome, and we will have a good, if not elite WR class. Manning would have helped there, I think.

I think Manning could be really good. I wish we would have landed him. Texas should be glad they did, and it was a huge bump for Sark. I am just not sold on any players being a pied piper like many talk about. And I don't think Manning is any different.

No wonder Georgia recruits so well -- they are signing recruits already for 2024, while the rest of the country only gets verbals. Must be nice.

Georgia isn't quite the team to be comparing to another school, unless it is OSU or Bama. Really only Bama, as OSU's monster recruits are usually on offense. And Georgia, coming off a national championship and putting a half dozen guys off their defense in the 1st round of the NFL draft -- OF COURSE they are going to pull in elite defensive recruits.

And defensively -- Texas is atrocious. So why would elite defensive recruits head there, unless they are from the state? Texas has been one of the worst tackling teams i've seen in CFB over the last 5-10 years.

Elite defensive recruits want to play with other elite defensive recruits on elite teams. Georgia showed last year what they can with those players on defense.

You know what I meant. Commitments, obviously.

I agree ... I wish we were recruiting better on the O side ... still really good, just not elite this year.

I compared us because Manning ended up being a Texas/UGA fight at the end. My main point is that I just don't see the pied piper effect, unless that means you get a bunch of low 4* and high 3*.

Obviously the players that will have the biggest impacts have mentioned Arch.. Malik Muhammad top 30 CB, Johntay Cook (top WR in TX), Williams (5 star composite DB from Louisiana).

But if Baxter (on3 #1 RB) stays true to his silent, he will announce on August 10th for the Horns.. and Jalen Hale a top 115 or so WR is also rumored to be a silent and is set on announcing on his birthday in September.. those recruitments were also impacted by Arch

Now the big fish, and it's already been written is 5 star LB Anthony Hill. His dad has given quotes that Cooper came up to him and said they want his son in this class. Fong did a write up yesterday saying aggy is the leader and he feels good about it, but everyone else following this recruitment, thinks he's Texas bound.

Arch really is a pied piper.. those rankings you have given out is because much of the OL, outside Chatman are all projects.. But this is what Flood wanted. He was on these guys early (since last year), and took them despite their rankings. He's a size queen and if you look at the measurables, he is staying true to it.

Our guy showed up and competed. And won. I'll take that any day over a guy who was nowhere to be found and might be good enough to win something like this. Repeat, might.

he also dropped in the On3 ranking.. and if you listen to stars matter.. all the QBs struggled out there.. even your winner there..
