Are Facebook scammers getting lazy, or are they getting dumber?

My son and I were talking about this the other day. He has never known a time when cell phones didn't exist. I can remember when, if you wanted to have a private conversation, your phone had to have a chord long enough to reach another room. lol

You’re posting on social media right now. Probably best for you to stay off FB, though. You’d definitely fall for the scams
Apart from boards like this, which are not useful tools for scammers, and FB, I have no social media accounts at all. FB's overall quality is in the toilet, but I keep an open account to keep up with friends and family scattered about the globe. I have maximum security available and apart from getting the odd duplicate friend request, have not experienced anything I could label as a scam. I never answer my land line at home as it's 99.99% telemarketers. I let the answering machine take it, but it's always a hang up. If you want to reach me, call my mobile and I'll pick up if I see your name. If I don't see a name, you'll have to leave a message and I'll get back to you if it makes sense. If a call says "private number" I will respect your privacy and press the disconnect button. It's been years since I've had to talk to a telemarketer.

Yep. They're not being hacked, they're being 'cloned'.

When you accept the clones friend request it gives the clone access to your friends list if you have that feature enabled.

Any time you get a friend request from someone who already has an account, click the 3 dots in the upper right corner of the 'clones' account and report them for "Impersonating a friend". Then block the clones.
I just deny the request

Cell phones have been around my entire life, but I was around 15 when it became standard practice for pretty well everyone to have a cell phone. I was closer to 20 when landlines really started to go away.

I was thinking the other day that I don’t even remember the old phone number for my parents house. I’m pretty sure my paternal grandparents are the only people I know that still use a landline more than a cell phone. My grandma has a cell for emergencies, my grandpa has never had one probably never will. My maternal grandpa is the first person I can remember having a cell.

My sister and her husband have a landline, but I think it's more for sentimental reasons. They bought the house our parents bought when we were in junior high. They changed the name on the bill, but have kept the number.

Couldn't tell you the last time I heard it ring when I was visiting or the last time I tried to call them on it. lol.

My parents still had a landline until just a couple years ago. The internet package they had at the time was bundled with the landline or something. The ringer was turned off though

People around my age were probably among the first to not have a landline at their first place after moving out

I had one up until about five years ago. When we moved to Texas, there just wasn’t a reason to get one. Can’t say I’ve missed it. I don’t have a standard PC for personal use, either. I have a laptop for work, but all of my personal computing needs are done with an iPad or my phone.

I don’t know when this started, but I’ve gotten at least 3 friend requests from dead people the last month.

Who is possibly falling for whatever scam they’re trying to pull, and should we even feel sorry for anyone dumb enough to fall for it?

But also, boomers need to learn that some scammer making a fake profile pretending to be them definitely doesn’t mean they’ve been hacked. Part of me wants to go to 4chan and hire some real hackers to teach them the difference

i saw a scammer post from some chick who died 2 weeks ago. sad shit right there.

i dropped my landline in 2009. We didn't bother to sign up when we bought our first house.

My old laptop shit the bed last year. I haven’t bought another. I use my phone now.

I find it funny that kids no longer go like *this* for "call me" because they have never experienced phones that look like that.

also the phone logo for missed call is not something the get...just like using a floppy disc for "save"

I hate the phone so much. My ringer isn't ever on.

my fitbit vibrates if a call comes in and I can see the number
I don't wear a smart watch, just an analog one

I don't want more connectivity that makes me want to look at my phone more.

My parents keep their landline but won't answer it because they say it's nothing but telemarketers so you have to call them on their cell phones. They keep the landline because they've had that phone number for over 40 years and they are scared family or friends they haven't talked to in a long time won't be able to reach them if they don't have it.

I countered that if you haven't heard from them since you started using cell phones they are either dead or you'll live not receiving their call but that response didn't go over well and I dropped it.

Old people and the illiterates still fall for the easiest shit ever so they don't need to be clever.

Simply put we're not the intended target for these scammers.
