B1G Coaching Carnage

Minny should of brought back Dan Monson

sorry guys, but Minnesota just made a laughably bad hire.

1.) Johnson isn't even Xavier's top assistant.
2.) Johnson has spent the past decade around mediocre or declining programs.
3.) Zero head coaching experience is a huge no when the coach's mentors are Richard Pitino and Travis Steele.

This is pretty much my point. Would Johnson even have been in the running at program like Loyola, Drake etc if they hypothetically became open? I doubt it. If he's making more than 1.5/yr he's being vastly overpaid.

I think that was mostly the reason. Get him
Cheap as hell.

i'm convinced that Thad Matta is done coaching

you guys can say that "well, he's reasonable young", but man, he looks awful. Matta has serious health issues and a guy that can't give it 100% on the recruiting trail shouldn't be the head coach at a high major.

Matta showed a bit of interest in Wake last year, but he didn't get past the initial interview. while Wes Miller and Pat Kelsey did. Matta is done.

Heard the Hoosiers had a deal in place, but he couldn’t pass a physical.

Sucks. He’s a helluva coach.

"Splain me this Lucy". Indiana wants a guy to coach their storied hoops program that wasn't good enough/healthy enough to remain at Ohio State?

I think they were hoping that time away to rest was helpful for him. He is/was a great coach, but like hitman was talking about, his health sunk him

Damn! Him and Urban both. You guys are hard on a coach's health!

I agree. I'm not rooting against him but I don't know why Minnesota made this hire.
Minnesota, more than most imo, is obsessed with local recruits, Johnson is well respected with local basketball community

Coyle is banking on that. We'll see how it goes

Coaching hires can be a crap shoot. Sometimes those "questionable" hires turn out to be great coaches.

I thought I saw where they wanted someone with a natty under their belt?

That would narrow it down to a few active coaches; Jim Boeheim, Jay Wright, Tom Izzo, Coach K, Roy Williams, Tony Bennett, Calipari, Tubby Smith, Jim Calhoun, and Bill Self. That ain't happening.

Mn has tried everything

Up and comer from gonzaga (monson)
Veteran coach with national championship (tubby)
Young up and comer groomed and recommend by HOF coaches (pitino)

Might as well try assistant route

Jim Calhoun is still alive?
