Basketball Article But NIL Issue

I just don't see the NCAA being able to regulate this. And congress/state legislatures/assemblies or whatever they are called don't seem interested in stepping in either. Soooooooooooooooooo, let the free market work. Isn't that what we are all about?
start with actual name image and likeness
not these every player gets $XXX deals. where is their name image or likeness being used?
put a cap on the deals. and see what the market for such things that are being promoted.
like are these deals comparable to other endorsements?
take beats by dre. they have deals with actual celebs so are the college players getting bigger deals? might look into why

also i think at some point these people shelling out money will wise up
like Ewers hasnt played a snap is making over a million for what? autographs? of an unproven college player? they really feel like they are gonna get a good return? and if they dont will they be gunshy to try again with the next recruit?
are they gonna realize that most people dont care that the big time recruit that hasnt done anything year is driving a car and in a commercial for the local Ford dealer vs the starting QB or RB?
like if i see a commercial with Justin Herbert (when he was at Oregon) im probably paying more attention than seeing tyler shough just because of * and potential.

Some of 'em have so much money they don't care. Look at how they payoff fired coaches without blinking an eye.

I don't think you can put a cap on deals because technically it is supposed to be between the player and third parties. Can you legally limit what someone in the free market can make?

The only way to regulate this is to put the players under contract and pay them like pros. I know everyone hates that idea (and I do too) but Pandora's box is open and even if things calm down it will only ramp up if boosters think they are close to having "the team". Egos of rich people will drive this as much as greed from the players.

I do hope the NCAA slaps some of these programs for setting us these Alumni funded entities that are guaranteeing money to every player like Miami and Texas seem to be doing.

Come fall aTm is going to be on the hook for 30mm if the rumors are true. The SEC distributed 55mm to each school last year so just do the math and see how ridiculous and unsustainable that is.

Putting them under contract makes them employees. No way they are doing that until NIL is fully tried.

The NCAA can have some regulation as to how NIL works ... the rules they wrote covered it, they just chose to ball up into the fetal position and suck their thumbs. Now that the NCAA has benched their president, let's see what real businessmen can do.

For now, put guard rails in place that take the boosters out of direct contact, and then give it time. Seems that it about to happen:

I've thought a lot about this and we all knew that lots of money would be going out. There are two things that surprised us: (1) was the huge amounts ... no one saw $8 million to a high school QB, and (2) that the boosters would be so brazen about it. But, if you look more closely, the teams that are being brazen about it are those that are desperate for relevancy - ATM, UTjr, Miami, USC, and others. I don't mean any offense to the fans of those teams, but those are 4 teams that are begging to get back to their former greatness, or in ATM's case to get out of the UT shadow. They and their boosters are doing dumb things to try and get there.

The large amounts will take care of themselves. Once the players don't get the money, get it and then transfer, get it and don't perform, the egos aren't stroked any more, and/or the NCAA cracks down on boosters, you will still see payments that aren't market related/driven, but it won't be as crazy.

As to the relevancy point, once 4 years go by so that all the players have had a shot at getting their NIL, I believe the transfer portal will calm down. By then, everyone will have figured it out, and most of the P5 will be able to pay the amount needed to stay at their current pecking order. In other words, Bama, LSU, UGA, tOSU, OU and the other top teams the past decade will come close enough to matching the money of the brazen schools such that the reason they are the top schools will still attract most of the top talent (although for the good of the game I hope it spreads it around a bit more). I left Clemson out because who knows what Dabo will or won't do.

Here we go:

WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State fired athletic director Darron Boatright on Wednesday amid growing criticism over the university's inability to compete in the new market of name, image and likeness payments to athletes.

The men's basketball program had eight scholarship players enter the NCAA transfer portal this spring.

"Where we erred was focusing on educating our athletes about NIL and not just collecting cash and paying kids to come to Wichita State," Boatright said in a previous interview. "We were told all along this was not pay-for-play, but now it appears the NCAA has no problems with that, so why not?"

So a lamb and a rabbit are getting ready to go meet with the wolves about setting up a system to make everyone safer. Hot damn! They even want to meet with Spartacus, one of the biggest morons in Washington D.C. I can hardly wait to see how successful that is all going to turn out.

If he does not receive an increase in compensation from his name, image, likeness deal, University of Miami hooper Isaiah Wong plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

Wong’s agent, Adam Papas, confirmed the player’s plans to ESPN on Thursday. “If Isaiah and his family don’t feel that the NIL number meets their expectations, they will be entering the transfer portal (Friday), while maintaining his eligibility in the NBA draft and going through the draft process,” Papas said.

This is going to kill college sports if it isn't reined in. Free agency, with no salary cap and no contractual obligations, is an absolutely idiotic formula for college sports.

Wongs Agent? He should be done with college. Fuck that

it was all good when Cam took the highest bidder

That is not even remotely related to what we are talking about and is not relevant.

Make a positive contribution to the discussion or just stay out of it.

It's specifically allowed in all the NIL laws, and the NCAA rules.

You'd rather have the 17 year olds negotiating their own contracts?

idk...

i just want to go back to the old bowl game system
I'm with you on wanting what we had, but that ship has sailed, and I am 100% in on the kids getting some of the billions that is being shared by everyone else. Just want it to be more organized.

lol do you know how many people would be upset if we went back to the old ways? Imagine 3 viable schools not playing each other because they are tied to the Rosebowl, Cotton Bowl or Sugarbowl respectfully

When I say old way, I am not for the polls picking. I am referring to the old way that players were student-athletes, truly student-athletes. It's longing for the way it used to be. I know those days are gone, but there was a lot to like about them. You've read enough of my posts to know I am not advocating we go back to any of that.

I'd go back further than you. I'd lover to see the return to the days of two way players. While I'm not old enough to have been at UTEP during the Don Maynard era, many that were there at the time swear he was jsut as good (if not better) of a defensive back as he was a wide receiver.

I know, I know...I'm an old fart.

The two way player I can remember was Champ Bailey - 1996-98.

From Wiki: In his final year at Georgia, he registered 52 tackles (four for losses), three interceptions, seven passes deflected, 47 catches for 744 yards (15.8 avg.), five touchdowns, 84 yards rushing on 16 carries, 12 kickoff returns for 261 yards and four punt returns for 49 yards. He averaged 103.5 all-purpose yards per game and logged 957 plays (547 defense, 301 offense, and 109 special teams) on the way to earning consensus first-team All-America and first-team All-Southeastern Conference honors and claiming the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nation's top defensive player. Against the Virginia Cavaliers in the Peach Bowl, he caught 3 passes for 73 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown, rushed 3 times for 9 yards, returned 5 kickoffs for 104 yards, returned a punt 12 yards, and posted 2 tackles and 1 pass defended at cornerback.

He's your kind of player, I am guessing.

Champ was a good one. Probably the best was a 3-way player. IIRC, Sammy Baugh led the NFL in passing, interceptions and punting in a single season.
