I remember reading somewhere that he couldn't do that long opening scene because he would lose his voice or something (or maybe just not good enough), so they asked Ermey to do it as he was a consultant at the time. Also remember reading that he came up with all of that dialogue quickly and most of it was improv, which is a credit to him since Kubrick was notorious for not letting actor improv or ad-lib their lines..
