9 of the top 10 are WWII movies.
Why is that ???

1) The Great Escape
2) Patton
3) Stalag 17
4) The Guns of Navarone
5) Spartacus
6) Tora Tora Tora
7) PT 109
8) Von Ryans Express
9) Inglorious Bastards
10) The Dirty Dozen

The next 5 not so much

Honorable Mention
MASH
Starship Troopers
The Hunt for Red October
The Undefeated

I'll go out on a limb and suggest that each of those movies are heroic in nature and non-fictional.

The Honorable Mention are fictional movies.

Need to give this thought, but ww2 was the last time that combining arms was an even deal and unknown odds.
Tanks played a role, aircraft, artillery, foot soldiers, ship support, subs, etc.
There’s this sense that even if both sides did their best, you don’t know the outcome of any engagement.
After ww2, war became much more technological, and as long as the side with the advantage didn’t fuck up, they were gonna succeed.
So war movies afterward didn’t have the WAR part as an active plot line… they had to focus more on the psychological aspects, etc.
That might play into it.

Now, the top 10 list above… where is Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket? Where is Gallipoli? Where is Das Boot???
And if you want an unsolicited recommendation: Mosul.
And you really shouldn’t put Dirty Dozen on a list of top ten war movies. That’s just silly.

Apocalypse Now is in the Vietnams and Cambodia. Full Metal Jacket is the US and them Vietnams. Gallipoli is in Thracian Turkey. None of those films are set in the 30’s or 40’s.

That’s my point, genius.

The answer is: you like Gladiator Movies.

Gave you guys like two and half hours.

Das Boot. That is all.

Also no love for Kelly's Heroes? Maybe not the best, but certainly a fun watch.

Battleground was a pretty decent Battle of the Bulge movie.

Not legit without The Outlaw Josey Wales. Also, Saving Private Ryan not a Top 10? WTF? Full Metal Jacket? 1917? I can name a Top 10 and use none of your list. I love Patton and the Dirty Dozen.

Saving Private Ryan
Apocalypse Now
Full Metal Jacket

These are some of my favorites. I haven't watched most of those old WWII movies so it is hard for me to rank the best all time.
I recently watched Midway. That was a good movie.

I think we need to define what makes a "war movie"

Is it just bang bang shoot em up action? Or is there some other drama going on for part (or most of) the film?

Cause Schindler's List is probably one of the best movies ever made about WWII

"The Sand Pebbles" is a personal favourite that is not WW2. It's incredible, McQueen and Attenborough are both great and young Candice Bergen looks stunning

There have been so many: A Bridge Too Far, The Longest Day, From Here to Eternity, Pearl Harbor...
