Big 12 thread

Jimmie Johnson's take on the difference in coaching in college and the NFL. Several coaches are proving him wrong. I guess Texas (and several others) isn't a top 10-12 program since they've fallen short a lot lately. Who do you think are the "top 10 or 12 schools" Johnson is talking about?

Rhule isn’t the first coach to seek Johnson’s knowledge about transitioning from college to the NFL. First-year Jacksonville coach Urban Meyer, who won three national titles between Florida and Ohio State, also is on that long list.

Johnson tells them all the same thing: There’s a “world of difference’’ between the two, from the length of the season to the age of players to the financial aspects.

“If you’re at one of the top 10 or 12 schools, you’re going to get the best players and you’re gonna win eight or nine games regardless of who the head coach is,’’ Johnson said. “It’s not that way in the NFL.’’

I could drop 5 teams that would disprove the bold.

OU needs to fix this crap fast. This is beyond pathetic. And this is against three weak ass teams.

One of the major reasons OU’s offensive efficiency is down so far this season has been the lack of a deep passing game.

Sooners quarterback Spencer Rattler has just 17 completions of 15 yards or more, and only one of those — a 20-yarder to Eric Gray against Western Carolina — went for a touchdown. Last season, Rattler had 20 such completions — six for touchdowns — through three games.

In Riley’s first six seasons at OU, the average length of a Sooners’ touchdown pass was 27.5 yards, including 25.2 by Rattler last season. So far this season, it's 7.7.

Rattler has just one completion longer than 28 yards this season — a 50-yard completion to Marvin Mims in the opener against Tulane.

Lack of speed?

Scheme?

Hiding playbook?

Not enough protection to let routes develop?

Teams clued in to what LR does now?

So many possibilities. I've noticed the downfield blocking hasn't been what it has in the past.

Regardless, I still believe that we should be able to line up against 80% of the teams out there and run it down their throat.

They play two deep safeties and make OU try to run the ball. Our rushing game used to open up the passing offense with all the funky monkey play action, etc. But our rushing game is no great shake right now and that inhibits everything else. Plus, Rattler is a so-so QB this year compared to how we has playing most of last year. He's regressed. But it all eventually ends up on Riley's shoulders to fix. Another problem Riley faces (but will NOT admit in public) is OU isn't a physical team. Can he do it? We're gonna find out pretty quick.....especially with Texas coming up because they always exploit whatever weakness OU might have. The jury's still out on this OU team.

I laugh when people call Lincoln an 'Offensive Guru'.
It's hilarious.

He's able to beat up on inferior teams, that's it.
What team has he ever beat who had equal or better talent???

Where I fault Lincoln Riley is in his overall approach to recruiting and team emphasis. Look, he's put up a tremendous number of points even against the really good teams. Of course he's also had three starting NFL-like QB's plus Mr. Hot/Cold 5 Star Gonna Be The Next #1 Pick running his offenses. But he's not been able to bring in enough running backs (and keep them) who can keep an opponent off balance with the threat of taking it to the house on any down. And to be fair, we've lost most of our games because of a porous defense. But, repeat but, look at our recruiting: it's been way over balanced toward the O and Grinch has had to make chicken salad out of chicken shit and he's doing a good job. But we need more horsepower at running back and on both lines. As teams catch up to what Riley's strengths are, he needs to evolve. Pronto.

This is the area that is the most difficult to recruit IMO. It sure seems like the other positions are more plentiful as far as close to equal talent goes. The supply of OL and DL is less plentiful. And the gap in ability seems among them seems to be a much larger range than the other positions.

A coach from the Sooner State comes to the northwest and cries about officiating...sounds familiar.

Yeah it's hard on Oklahoma when the SEC vacuums up 90% of the 4* and 5* linemen. But that's on us. It's time OU stops whimpering about it and starts doing something to fix that problem. We've known about this for several years. It's not a big surprise. Let's see if Riley and Grinch and the rest of this OU staff are worth the millions they're getting paid. It's not as if we're going to end up playing mostly SEC teams on our schedule someday or anything. :ohwell:

Yep. But I'd say the SEC gobbles up a higher percentage of DL than of OL. Seems like other schools have more decent OLs.

I've always thought ou recruited well at OL?

We have at times but it's been more of a combination of good recruiting and some really super coaching. We only get one real stud at a time. That recruiting needs to get better........MUCH better when we're going against the DL's we'll see in the SEC.
