Big 12 thread

Damn! If I'm reading the one with the 8 public institutions correctly, TCU at $120 million would be 3rd in total revenue behind only Texas and OU. Please tell me I'm reading that wrong.
You aren't. The rumor has also been that Sweaty is the highest paid coach in the entire conference among all sports when all sources of income are considered. He's got deals (investments, etc.) with boosters that are supposedly waaaay beyond what is discussed in polite society. Apparently nothing is illegal about them but there have been stories in the Fort Worth paper that they are worth millions of annual income.

Good find, bro.

This makes it even more frustrating for frog fans. Gary should be getting much better classes of incoming talent.. they bring in money, are in one of, if not the hottest recruiting areas in the US.

Then I have two thoughts.

1. Coach Hitch 'em up may be too complacent.
2. If he has his sack full along with investment income, why the hell keep coaching? Just play his geetar at the local Honky Tonk.

What a craptastic cycle for this conference

To be fair, Oklahoma State's qb commit is the same height as Drew Brees which is an automatic disqualifier for 4* status these days. He has a similar skill set though so in 3-4 years the talking heads will probably be like "Oh Texas missed again on a dude". We're going to land a 4* running back and wide receiver which is pretty normal for us. Everyone likes to talk about Gundy finding diamonds in the rough but the recruiting services tend to look favorably on our skill position talent.

Big story here for us us the current lone 4* commitment is going to be a hybrid safety.

I really like this thread its morphed into an informative round talk with plenty of differing opinions. Light years ahead of the lame ass first post.

ehhh.. to me this isn't anything big, it's only an issue because Texas isn't winning enough.

I have to respectfully disagree. It's toxic. It's nothing that's positive to anyone except for those few Texas fans who think they're proving something "woke". If this was happening at OU and a bunch of players were peeing all over Boomer Sooner you'd think it was something big. So would a lot of the OU alums. I've been preaching for a couple of years that the donors at these Universities are about to hit their breaking point. We're tired of the constant pleas for help and then people acting as if we shouldn't care that much about how our donations are actually used. My wife hit the roof a couple of months ago and now she sees what I've been trying to get people to understand: He who has the gold, makes the rules. Winning has nothing to do with it; a lack of respect for donors and tradition would trip up even teams like Alabama that are winning enough.

I've got to agree with this but I'd add political clout to it as well...and it ain't just related to athletics. Ex students that attended many of the most prestigious academic institutions constantly told me about classmates that were not too swift academically but were "legacy admissions" because their families had been large huge donors to those universities for multiple generations. I specifically remember students at Ivy League schools like Yale, Brown, Harvard, Columbia and Penn.

Hell, it hasn't been that long ago that shit blew up in the Texas lege because Texas and A&M were doing such things when state senators and representatives and their big campaign contributors started squeezing them.

Not to mention the recent college admissions crap.

You literally had alumni from aggy protecting the sully statue and even had two players transfer because of that. Mond was a big speaker and the fanbase turned on him.. then the season happened and not a word about the whole thing because they were winning and most aggy fans were happy once again with Mond.

This stuff is toxic, if the school is underperforming.. all that goodwill Tom looked to have cashed in with his players was for nothing since they were all undisciplined in the losses that fall.

My only gripe with Caden Sterns is he needs to call out the Booster of Alumns that told him that. Be a difference maker

The right to free speech and individual choice have to be protected even if they upset someone else. Unfortunately a lot of today's college-age people haven't been taught that. An athlete has the right to object to something and the alumni have a right to respond either positively or negatively. We've hired a slew of OU players over the years to work summer jobs and believe me they work....no sloughing off and you'd better show up sober on time every day or you're history. If a player (male or female) ever chose to denigrate something associated with OU that I found seriously objectionable I'd have a talk with them and try to iron it out. If that was impossible I'd no longer have them work for me. Same thing if they had come to me for the first time to get a job after their graduation and I knew they had acted in ways as a player that I found unacceptable. I wouldn't hire them. And it has absolutely nothing to do with race. I would have done the same thing with not allowing someone like Brian Bosworth or Joe Mixon or Rhett Bomar or Trey Metoyer, etc. to work for me because behavior has consequences. As for "calling someone out", that's a career move a smart person wouldn't make. Call me out publicly and I'll guarantee you I'll embarrass that person and also be talking to my friends and it will quickly be more than just me silently closing their wallet and pulling away from supporting bad behavior. Caden Sterns has a right to his opinion; he just needs to understand he's not speaking ex cathedra. There may be repercussions.

I don’t totally disagree with you. But the University in this situation (texas) is in a horrible spot. You risk fucking with the alums major donations/funding goes down. You risk fucking with the players over something the players say is important (especially in this instance) you risk losing talent for years to come which in turn could lead to bad teams and less and less donors.

There needs to be a medium. And no, not always those who have the gold make the rules.

As grating as it may be to hear it, those with the gold do make the rules. That's true in just about anything you want to look at. Now, as for letting 19 year olds who are just passing through set the rules for a University that is a flagship institution and has over a half million alumni, it's hard to keep from laughing out loud. Truth be told, if you could talk in absolute privacy to the players, a majority of them know they have a good thing going and making a big issue of the song isn't wise. But peer pressure is a strong thing at that age so some of them pay lip service to the "controversy" and hope for the best. As for recruiting, it won't make a bit of difference to Texas. UT is one hell of nice place to go to college and playing in their programs is something a person can be proud of for the rest of their lives. They'll be fine on the recruiting trail so long as their coaching is decent and they aren't on probation.....which is unlike to happen because let's face it: Texas doesn't have to cheat to get good players.

They aren't losing recruits because of this.. they are losing recruits when they continue to lose and look unstable the way Tom Herman had them last season..

Tom bending over in defeat in the first quarter vs TCU and ou in consecutive weeks did more damage to the 21 class than the EOT.. Had UT won in Dallas last year.. You'd bet your ass most of the team would have been out there during the eyes

As nerving as it is to hear as a self proclaimed “booster”. No, you don’t. Not always. I know you and whoever you blow if you actually are a booster think you make the rules. But you Are merely a puppet that has money. (If you actually have money) You don’t have the ability to command everything. And when you request something most of said players disagree with, it won’t take much of anything for them to tell you to fuck off. Especially in this day and age. Because let’s face it if the football team is winning, it doesn’t really matter what happens.
