Bowl Game opt outs.........

I hope the worst for every single player on every single team that "opts out" of playing in the bowl game their TEAM earned an invitation to. Sick of the "opt out" term. Should just call it what it is.............QUITTING.

The Sun Bowl is fatastico! It's an old traditional Bowl (2nd oldest) in a cool stadium and puported to be one of the most fun Bowls to attend as a player (ask Lee Corso!). FWIW, Bowl King Alabama is a 3 time Champion (1983, 1986 and 1988), that was where Iowa State played thier 1st Bowl Game (1971 vs. Bert Jones and LSU), and it is one of may favorite Bowl experiences (Stanford vs. Mich. State in 1996) as a fan. Good matchup this year with Wash. State and Miami (Fla.) too! @Deep Creek can confirm!

It is a terrible bowl and El Paso sucks. I am sure it is a nice place to visit but between Christmas and New Years it is hell on earth. A bowl game in downtown Portland is more enviable.

It would really suck to see Pickett not play in the Peach Bowl after Pitt had their best season in a long time.

If you are opting out of a NY6 bowl, you are getting bad advice from someone in my opinion. Get some insurance and play in front of millions, or be talked about like a little bitch in front of millions...hmmm.

I still think Pickett has some proving to do. A lot of people have heard of him but have never seen him play. Playing a nationally televised game against a porous pass defense (MSU) could do wonders for his draft stock.

How good is Pitt gonna look without their OC? i.e. How much of those numbers were Pickett's talent compared to game scheme and play calling?

If they look bad, then Pickett's draft stock could drop out of the first round.

Reasonable argument. I can accept that. Still rubs me the wrong way, but I can't argue the logic.

Well I'm certainly hoping it was Whipple's game scheming and play calling as opposed to Pickett's talent for obvious reasons.

I'm not real big on Nebraska going to air-raid in the Big 10 anyway. If Pitt looks good in their bowl without Pickett, then I'll feel even worse about it.

I'm old school, so it took me a while to warm up to our current offense. As long as we can still line up and punch it across from the 1 when needed, I'm down with it though.

I know what you mean, sometimes in November, you need to be able to play smash-mouth....nowhere was that more true than the old Big 8 and the Big 10.

The fat & nasties up front rarely get the credit they deserve when offenses perform well. The skill players get all the love. The O-line certainly takes a verbal lashing when they don't perform well. "If we had an O-line" yada yada.

Sure there are always a few O-linemen getting praise come award day (Remington, Outland, Lombardi), but there are 4 other guys around them helping them look good.
An O-line that gets lined up right and executes their assignments is what makes things tick for the skill players.

I think the people that matter notice the guys in the trenches. It isn't good TV for the talking heads to point out solid run blocking, every so often they will do so. But the ones doing the drafting for Sunday teams know for sure.

Yup, some of the great Nebraska teams of the '80s had some great all-time offensive lines. The Dave Remington, Traynowicz, Steinkuhlers got all the love, but there were some earth movers in there.

It was Schellen and Rathman that made me a Nebraska fan, though. I grew up playing mostly fullback in I-Formation offenses, so that was always the dream spot. I played MLB too, the only thing that changed on defense was sometimes the guy I hit had the ball...good times, lol.

Leal is out for A&M. Wake appears to have their full team.

Calzada will still be our QB, so chalk up another loss.

Mostly from Pickett talent and his Biletnikoff finalist teammate Jordan Addison (not draft-eligible). There's already a ton of tape on Pickett so I don't believe he has anything to prove but it would be nice to see him finish the great season his team is having

I really dont understand opt outs

If youre that concerned about injury you shouldve just opted out of the entire year or at least once your team was eliminated from playoff contention. Playing vs 4-6 team X in your conference in week 12 when your team is 7-3 is a far bigger waste of your time than playing in a bowl and a far bigger risk

99.9% of guys will be healthier going into their bowl games than theyve been since week 1 anyway

It is the 2nd oldest bowl. IIRC, it is the only one CBS still broadcasts. And Bernie Olivas and the rest of the Sun Bowl crew do a great job of treating the teams well. The teams arrival greeting is very, very festive at the airport. Sometimes too festive. Here's a more recent picture looking the the same end zone after Larry Durham built them a new complex. The glass is the weight room which looks to the South over the Sun Bowl, part of the campus, downtown EP and Juarez as well. Great view....especially at night. Well, great view with the exception of those warm winter days/cold nights with no wind. The inversion causes the smog to settle right there and it looks like LA or Phoenix.
