Brian Kelly

If we somehow get in, I hope we go Michigan basketball circa 1989 and win it with an interim. Lmao.
That would be delicious. And the ultimate fuck you to Kelly. (Gee ND just can’t win a national championship)

Honestly, I hope we go the OSU route(promote from within) and just give it to Freeman. With as much as we lost on defense to produce the way we did defensively was awesome. Plus he's a hell of a recruiter. Triple his salary(I'm guessing he's in the 2/2.5 mil range) and call it a day.

Yeah it would. Honestly after getting over the shock of it, I don't think it's all that bad. I'm guessing more kids committed to Freeman than Kelly in these last couple cycles, so I don't think we'll see a mass Exodus like we have with OU. I'm just hoping the roster and recruiting stays somewhat together.

That’s the thing about ND. Kids commit to play there not for the coach. And it’s always been the staff that recruits. Kelly rarely gets too involved in that aspect. This class and the next are almost entirely Freeman Elston and Lance Taylor and Brian Polian’s doing.

I’d be fine with Freeman getting promoted, but failing that it had better be a home run hire.

Do you think anyone will follow him? Sounds like a no.

Hard to say if it's his fault, but I've felt that any time Notre Dame has 'contended' for the National Championship under him, I just knew they were gonna get stomped.

Like, they were playing in the game, but you knew they really didn't have a chance.

Maybe fresh blood is what they need.
Talent gap has been the issue. Also Kelly played not to lose a lot of the time. I’m not saying they would have beat that 2012 Bama team but they might have made it at least a competitive game of Kelly wasn’t out trying to land the Eagles job.

For the collars just “being in the conversation” was good enough. The fans, not so much.

I don't think so. Unless it's a position coach. Freeman and Rees will probably be candidates for ND, and Polian might be looking at a G5 school(somewhere like a Temple) as the HC.

I’m not hearing it yet. Of the current staff, most likely would be Elston (he’s been with Kelly forever) and Jeff Quinn (another Kelly hanger-on.
I’d be devastated if he took Freeman but remember LSU was competing with ND for him too so that’s not entirely outside of the possibility

Screw morals and long term planning! Hire Urban Meyer. He's making $12 million PY in the NFL, ND could up that to $15 million PY and he could very likely win a Natty before he bails. This seems like the perfect time to get him too. Close the deal!

they can't get the kids that BK will fall backwards into in Louisiana. I saw him target honor roll kids in Texas (which also happen to be kids of immigrant catholics) and do well. There were other players within the state that were ranked higher as DE/OLB but he didn't even throw a hat in those rings.

Maybe I'm wrong and whomever that comes next will be a recruiting witch, but I'm still in the belief that you have one hand tied behind your back when it comes to recruiting at ND.

His wife apparently nixed the idea of him working for Orgeron (smart move). Doubt she was impressed with Baton Rouge (shithole) either. Smart lady.
Really? I hadn’t heard that. I think Freemen said earlier this year he was about 90% on his way to taking the LSU job when ND sweetened the pot although it’s hard to believe we outbid an SEC team for assistant pay. There has been speculation he was also given coach in waiting status as Kelly earlier this year suggested that Freeman would be the next coach.

Yeah, on our side we heard the wife nixed it on the plane ride home. Who knows ?

I tend to think that excuse is overwrought. ND was able to be one of the best recruiting classes year in and year out when standards were much higher.

They have relaxed not only their admissions but their disciplinary practices too. Yes they still have higher admissions standards than most football factories not it’s still not as hard as Stanford’s.

ND fell into a bad run of hires and too many let down years. Credit to Kelly he did being stability to the program. He just couldn’t get over the hump. And his assistant hires were pretty bad until very recently.

you mean when all their games were broadcasted on National TV, and everyone else wasn't?

**David Abiara got arrested and was soon released of his commitment.. charges were later dropped. B&E charge IIRC

Elko seems like he did pretty well since leaving BK.. and looks to be that Freeman may be the biggest DC grab to be had in another week

Yes. Their admissions standards were much higher then too.

everyone is on TV now, and private catholic schools are more into the AAU, basketball side of things than football. Hopefully the next guy can get it back to that

On the plus side it’s nice not to have to spend millions on a buyout seeing as how we just got Charlie Weis off the payroll
