CFP wussed out

CFB has always done this.

Go research your history and see the number of times New Year's Day Bowl Games were played on January 2 because January 1 fell on a Sunday.

Also because they wouldn't hold the Rose Bowl parade on a Sunday so the Rose Bowl itself was moved to accommodate the parade.

I'd rather watch NFL over college anyday. I love football. The NFL has been doing it right for many years as far a teams playing for wild cards & playoff seeding. This weekends NFL games are pretty much playoff games themselves.

College football & the NIL have a lot to learn & process to get to the NFL's level of play. Gonna need contracts & salary caps.
We are total opposites. I'm more CFB than NFL. I so prefer the NFL for the length of games. CFB games are too damn long IMO.

However, the way NIL and TP are being handled, I may be forced to switch. And to think I was one in favor of players getting a piece of the pie. I never thought it would be like this though.

I agree.

They should have put the games on Saturday and Sunday. Would have made for an epic day of sports and gambling.

They wussed out.

So long as the conferences are okay with taking 1/2 pay from ESPN instead of full payouts, sure.

I don't know the mechanics but it would have been nice to have both playoffs on the same day.

Similar for me on the bold. I always said that I wasn't against players getting a cut...but I couldn't think of a way to do it that would work.

What we are seeing now is why I always said I couldn't think of a way to make it work.

Having said that, now that there's something of a "framework" in place, there are some fairly obvious tweaks they can make that would improve things immensely. The question is...will they do it?

I have always been college over NFL. I watch NFL bc I play a lot of fantasy football. I like the growth of college football. I like the new cfp but it obviously needs to be tinkered.

The main issue I have with college football is the NIL shit. It is getting out of hand. I was weary at first but thought it could be good for the spot. NIL coupled with the portal is absolutely out of control. There should be a stipulation in these contracts where it is per game. Players should have to play bowl games unless they are injured. Players should have to stay one year at the programs. There has to be rules. Some of these kids are better off than younger guys on rookie deals in the NFL. It there are RULES this transfer portal/NIL shit will be out of control

The new rules favor the SEC. They've always been run more like a drywalling business and less like academic institutions.

The new rules give them the lattitude to dominate both football and basketball.

Once the media money got so big and the schools started spending large amounts on facilities and coaching salaries skyrocketed, the writing was on the wall.

Now you get 4 days of gambling.

Maybe, I am naive, but it is one of the reasons I like the new Big XII make-up so much. It's big time enough to be interesting, but it's not part of the cut-throat like the SEC and B1G are. Maybe that will last? Maybe it will not? In the mean-time, I am just enjoying my part of the CFB world. ISU actually had one of their best years ever (2020 was better), and it was a fun time. Just cannot worry about all of the Joneses out there.

My avatar was not my choice, get your mind out of the gutter
Yes it was, you chose to barter your avy choice up to a complete stranger.

One man's gutter is another man's oasis.

No, per usual my post goes quite a bit deeper than the shiny low-hanging fruit.
You would be a fun project for a psychiatrist.

Most people just don't "get" you....do they?

I was a college > pro guy for a long time. Portal and NIL has flipped that.

That to go with these lame ass mega conferences. I still love the college game, but despite my CFB team being a current top program and my NFL team being a laughingstock, I prefer the NFL game these days.

Also, UGA plays GT at the Falcons stadium next season and that’s just wrong.
This is where my ignorance pays off ... I just root for the uniform. Apparently, we got this recruit named Underwood ... I didn't even know she played football!!! CFB is more fun, but the NFL is better and more popular.

College was more fun. It's just not as much anymore.

Kids and coaches no longer commit to a school or culture, or at least you can't rely on it.

Coaches can now talk to kids on your team and offer them more money to bail?

Only thing that matters anymore is how much more money you can vacuum up from mega donors from your school.

Bowls were getting bad before, but they are down right hard to watch now. There were teams that had so many kids opt out or jump to the portal that they were missing players for specific positions. It's WAY crazier than it was prior to NIL/portal when it was only kids going to the draft.

There have only been 2 good games out of 8 so far in the new format playoffs and pretty much no one is happy with it.

Conferences are entirely a cluster fuck and the current structure doesn't seem feasible long term. Too many old rivalries will no longer exist.

The best thing the Big 12 has going for it is that no one team is “marquee” enough to overshadow the others. The span between the big dogs and bottom dwellers isn’t as large as the other conferences imo.

I’ve asked before to divide the teams into four “tiers” for lack of a better term. I tried and couldn’t do it. I have no idea which school has the largest athletic budget nor how much larger it is than the lowest one.

Do it based on revenue tiers then. Make more, spend more, move up.

That's the thing. I have no idea the budget numbers for the Big 12 schools and I'm too lazy (and not technological enough) to research it. On the surface it doesn't seem like there is much difference in them.

I'm guessing that Kansas, Texas Tech and Utah would have access to the most resources. But those probably aren't that much better than the rest and may just be my perception of things. And there probably aren't numbers available for BYU, TCU and Baylor since they are private and don't have to disclose such. (BYU can probably gather as much money up as they want to.) Pretty sure UCF and Arizona State have the largest enrollments by a long shot. And from what I recall, Arizona was in shit shape financially a couple of years ago.

This is another thing that needs to be fixed, imo. Coaches should not be allowed to contact players in the portal unless the player contacts them first. And they for sure shouldn't be allowed to contact kids who aren't in the portal.
