CMAC TO THE NINERS!!!

Yea, this. It's like we're doubling down on injuries.

So we give up a 2, 3, 4, and a 2024 5 for RB C.McCaffrey. On one hand, I get it—our running game has been lackluster and we’re a running team and CMC is a very good RB that fits perfectly in the SF offense.

OTOH, this looks like a massive mistake. Not only is McCaffrey injury prone (he’ll fit right in in SF), but his salaries in future years are exorbitant AND the trade effectively guts the 2023 draft.

This is something of an "all in" move. The NFC looks weak this year, and considering that Lance looks like a bust, this year might be the team's best chance for a while.

Gotta wonder if anyone in the SF FO can tell Kyle "no."
Do you think Lance is a bust?

Guess he'd rather play for Kansas City?

Yea, I think it looks that way. I just don't see the natural accuracy for basic throws that every Qb has to make. I know it's early (he's barely played), so he still has a chance. I dearly hope I'm wrong.

For me, it is hard to say yet. But he was the most boom and bust of the first round picks. The lack of experience and that he came from a division II school. I think if he busts I don't think it will be because of accuracy. It will be from his inability to make the jump from college to the pros. I think it will be more mental than physical. He is a smart kid but that doesn't mean he can process things quickly at the NFL level.

That's where I disagree. From seeing him play, it's my view that he can spot the correct receiver and process quickly enough, he just has trouble getting the ball there in an accurate place. His outside throws are pretty good, his deep throws are too, but his dump offs to RBs, screens, shallow crossing routes, and WR hitches are almost always high/late and scary looking. Those should be the easiest throws he has. It's his inaccuracy on those short throws that make me worry most about his future.

ESPN talking today they might trade Lance this offseason. Late first rounder they projected. I would be surprised if they get a late first rounder for him. I am leaning toward bust too.

seriously. he's started 4 games in the NFL and has 102 pass attempts.

Alex Smith was far worse in his first season (and 3rd)
Alex Smith was worse in a lot of seasons. Jim Harbaugh got a good season out of him when they went to NFC Title game and Andy Reid too for a few seasons. Captain checkdown.

I agree with you on the short term accuracy although I also see processing issues with him. I think that is inexperience that he might overcome.

That would be awful if they end up trading him for a late round pick after giving up three firsts to acquire him. This will define Shanahan/Lynch going forward.

I know this wasn't your comment, but Alex Smith started his rookie season while Lance only played in a couple of games his rookie season. And Smith played on a far worse team. Like Lance, Smith was only 20 years old coming out of college. He struggled his first year as expected but Norv Turner had Alex on the right track. When San Diego hired Norv Turner away at a late date, it sent Alex Smith in a downward spiral. The replacement OC and QB coaches were clearly way in over their heads. The whole offense sank. The OL could no longer block. That started a chain of awful OCs including one of the worst ever in Jimmy Raye. Harbaugh came in and brought some competent coaching. I also think Harbaugh did a lot to instill some confidence in Smith who had struggled under the dumpster fire that preceded Harbaugh. That said, Smith was always a limited QB who was too risk averse and would not through into tight windows or throw people open. A good game manager but never one to carry a team to victory.

Jimmy Raye a low point in 49er history for sure.

I think Harbaugh had enough of Smith after 1 season though. That NFC Title game in 2011 proved your point. Smith completed one pass to a receiver for the entire game. 3 yard pass to Crabtree. Kaepernick started mid season next season when Smith injured and never got his job back. I hope Lance is better than Smith. He needs opportunities and time. Problem is time is going to run out on all the other talent the 49ers have. Can't wait 2 or 3 more years for him to develop.

Same with Reid. Reid traded up for Mahomes even though things were going ok with Smith. I have issues with how Shanahan has been playing Lance. Too conservative. I was okay with that last season as Lance was a rookie and had to be thrown into games because of injury. But Lance was named the starter before the season even started. Shanahan doesn't seem to trust Lance to throw the ball even in critical situations. Shanahan has Lance running up the middle or throwing pitches to RBs on third down passing situations. If Shanahan isn't going to let Lance throw in those situations why start him in the first place? And he got hurt running up the middle on one of those plays.

I think he said late first rd pick, not late round pick. Even so, that would be a lot of egg for Lynch and Shanny to wear (and they'd deserve it).

That was a typo on my part. I meant late first round pick. Still looks bad. Gave up three first rounders and have to admit he didn't work out

Alex Smith as far as QBs go was a boring guy so no one made a big deal about him. But lets be fair. He went to the niners as a rookie & the niners were the worst team in the league. Started right away so no buffer to help his record. He was gonna struggle & lose.
However there isnt a team Smith has played for where he doesnt have a winning record for that team. Played on the Niners & they were a shitshow when he got there. Had to learn with a shit team & build it up. Left with a winning record.
Went to KC never ahad a season without a winning record.
Went to Washington which was a dumpster fire & had no business winning there. Not only had a winning record, but never had a losing season (granted only 2 partial seasons) 11-5 record

All Alex Smith did once he got experience was win. He stayed within himself & won. Never gonna be a HOFer or anything but he won. His last 9 seasons in the NFL were all winning records from SF, KC, Washington. I think he is one of those really underappreciated players in the NFL, because he is never in the elite conversations. He just won while flying under the radar.
