Coaching Carousel Scorecard This Season

The transition from triple option to pro style is a lot tougher than the transition from pro style to triple option.

I expected more progress by now, but at the same time, last year was essentially a lost year for most teams and I think you have to give him at least one more year, but next year should be bowl game at a minimum
Agree. The losses to citadel and northern Illinois are inexcusable, but the season is salvageable. If we don’t win another one, the pressure is on. Win 2 and a bowl next year is minimum expectations.

As to the first point, round pegs fit in square holes, but square pegs do not fit in round Holes. The change to 3O was easy, but the other direction is disasterous. But our greatest issue is defense, so not sure it really translates. Go in gently with vasoline at Thanksgiving.

Kirby doesn’t run up the score. One his biggest flaws IMO

ESPN got rid of Craig James but the Tech admin wouldn't stand up to him. Go figure.
AD Gerald Myers (and his ego)
was the main factor in the firing of Leach -
the Adam James incident
was just a convenient excuse -

True. Gerald wasn't swift but he had bosses that went along with it. They were all more concerned about appearance than substance.

Not one person or player associated with the football program had any sympathy for Adam James whatsoever. Everyone was tired of his antics and his dad's.

While this may sound like someone on this board that will remain unmentioned, I actually had legit insight into what went on with all that. The lady that served as secretary for several of the football coaches at Tech was in my graduating class from high school. She was a typical no nonsense oil patch gal and thoroughly disgusted about the whole situation. She's since retired but she still gets pissed off about it.

Here's another tidbit. Sonny Cumbie's dad, Bobby Jack Cumbie, was also a member of our graduating high school class. And he was a great guy but not athletic at all. Sonny's mom wasn't from our hometown so he must have gotten his athleticism from momma.(Doesn't Bobby Jack sound like a good old oil patch/hick name?)

Which goes against logic IMHO. If you are at a place that is as extremely difficult to fire one as you describe, why would you tie your hands up for that length of time? Was he that good at the time?

First, my mistake, he was at the end of a 6 year contract when they let him go and they offered him another 6 after year 3. I think maybe they offer a longer deal because they are limited on what they can pay.

Mora was 29-11 after his first 3 years. For UCLA football, that's a strong 3 year run. So yeah, they had their guy. Terry Donahue is considered by most UCLA fans, the greatest coach in their history...if memory serves, he averaged 8-9 wins per year. At USC, that would have had folks calling for his head by year 2 or 3 and gone by year 4.

It's funny with the sports that schools become known for. 8-9 wins a year in football would have gotten Donahue fired at USC. He coached about 20 years at UCLA.

Meanwhile, a few years ago, they fired their basketball coach Ben Howland after going to the Final 4 two years in a row. USC would have given him a lifetime contract for that.

they went to the FF three years in a row under Howland, lmao. In Howland's last year at UCLA, he won the Pac-12 but they still fired him

They didn't like his slower, "grind it out" style. It wasn't entertaining enough. Some folks are like that...there were a few USC curmudgeons who thought we passed too much during the Pete Carroll era. Especially after Reggie Bush and Lendale White left. lol

there were also rumors at the time that Howland had burned a bunch of bridges in the LA AAU scene. He was on Wake's radar in 2014 and there was an LA-based poster on OGBoards (Wake's #1 sports message board) that was 100% against hiring Howland. He hated him to such an extent that you'd think that Howland had banged his wife

From what I understand, he ruffled some feathers for sure. But the guy won basketball games...a lot of them and that's what he was hired to do.

Personally, I don't care how much of an asshole a coach is...if he's winning, you keep him. If he starts losing, then you fire his ass with extreme prejudice.

Umass and Uconn both seem like impossible jobs at this point. Those programs should either drop down to FCS or drop football all together.

was even on the front row
for toads and k-state -

i hate it for him -

Not sure Miami is really an upgrade from Michigan State. I think Mel Tucker sticks at Sparty unless he gets the LSU job

Yup, he wanted to be a lifetime Bill Snyder like coach. That's a little hard to do in Texas, and you better have a kickass season every 3rd year at least. Patterson has got to regret not jumping ship 3-4 years ago when he was in such high demand.
