Coaching Carousel

Mike Woodson to IU. Pretty uninspiring considering they what they paid to get rid of Archie.

This search started off with Brad Stevens speculation and ended with the hiring of a 63 year old lifelong NBA coach who has been the definition of mediocrity throughout his career. Indiana definitely feels dead.

They did get Matta as a side kick though.

But yeah, weird move.

Right now Auburn is a better job than Indiana.

horrific hire, zero collegiate coaching experience

Howard had zero collegiate experience when Michigan hired him, but at least he is a recent name. I'm also not completely sold on him, despite his success this year.

I didn't even know Woodson played at Indiana, lmao.

Pitino still has several good season in him left and as long as he keeps moving, NCAA is that much more behind him lol. I'm still hoping Billy Donovan listens, his NBA tenure has been disappointing.. but I think KD would have axe'd that (he reportedly doesn't like Billy D at all).

There's something about Beard that makes me feel he will not do well. He hasn't hit on bluechip players the way he will if he comes to Austin.. but the issue is that one of the biggest bluechip players he got to Lubbock.. portal'd after one season with him.
I don't know if Beard would work out at one of the "shiny" jobs or not. I think he's the perfect fit for a school like Tech.

In horse racing they use the term "Horses for courses" a lot. Meaning some horses naturally run better on some tracks that others. IMHO there are a lot of mismatches between schools and coaches. A lot of those mismatches are created because a guy just can't turn down the money that is offered....even if it isn't a good fit. IMO Shaka was a good example. I think he's a better fit for a VCU and Marquette than Texas. JMO.

Tech boosters stepped up to the plate two years ago to keep Beard. (And from what I understand Hocutt got the money committed in 24 hours.) I think he's one of the higher paid coaches. Obviously Texas could pay whatever is necessary but it isn't like Beard is being underpaid by Tech.

I agree and I think he stays at Tech which would be cool.

So if that happens, who is Texas calling upon then?

I have no idea. I was going to say that the high profile schools always seem they have to make a "sexy" hire because doing something less is below them. But then Indiana does something like they did and my theory is shot out the window.

I'd rather have a guy that can flat out coach than one that has a lot of pizzaz. "All hat and no cattle" don't work too well in my book.

You need a guy that can recruit and I don't mean the 1 and done guys. The teams that are advancing are landing guys that play together multiple years so they have that chemistry.

2nd you need a guy that build and improve chemistry.

All these guys can do the Xs and Os.

I agree you need a guy that can recruit. But, I disagree that all these guys can do the Xs and Os. How many teams play below their talent level? Many.

Why do schools even recruit the 1 and done guys?

Some of these coaches like Calipari it's the only way they know to do it. I'm hoping Pearl doesn't go down that road because if Cooper goes pro that is pretty much 3 in a row for us.

I agree and with the transfer portal situation, freshman recruiting classes may become less important that they have been.

But in a goofy way, a coach can be between a rock and a hard place when NOT recruiting those guys. They hear crap like "Why aren't you recruiting/signing the most talented players?" You aren't landing the top recruiting classes. If they are winning, they won't hear it. But if they are not....

Is Marquette a better job than Texas? Asking for a friend.
Not really better or worse but different. He'll probably do well there but not Final Four well. BookMarquette!
this isn't about Marquette vs Texas, this is about job stability
Yeah if this was football, he'd be already gone. Texas played excellent for parts of seasons, then there was always a swoon. Lack of consistency is maddening.

i think Smart is still a decent coach, but he's nothing close to the "future star in the coaching profession" projection that everyone had him aligned with back in 2014.

He had one top 30 team @ Texas in six years. That's pretty mediocre. Not to mention, he finished with a below .500 record in Big 12 play.

This could be a case of a bad fit, but we don't know that for sure.
Not a good fit is what I believe as well.

You should hear the list of "benefits" the Red Raider faithful are willing to pony up in order to try and keep Beard. Right now it is just scuttlebutt but some of the items are just nuts...both ways.

But, I'll play golf Friday with a guy that is more "legitimately in the know" than the other numbnuts that are popping off around here.

According to the UT site Orangebloods, Beard's buyout drops today but Tech is offering Beard even more. While Tech has some very loyal donors, I don't think they want to get into a bidding war with Texas. But what the hell do I know. Maybe they can't afford NOT TO pay up.
"We know Chris Beard’s buyout if another Big 12 or program inside the state hires him drops to $4 million tomorrow. Also, we know our colleagues at RedRaiderSports.com have been reporting on Texas Tech officials meeting with Beard and attempting to lock him in for even more money and years than the borderline insane salary - $5,050,000 last season - he makes currently. I suppose it’s fair to say the ball is in his court and the public silence about staying at Texas Tech or not should end soon."

What are you hearing @TechRaiderRider

Tech trying to pony up again.
