Back before 1965, the AP poll used to declare their champion before the bowls, and the coaches poll did this until 1975, this lead to a lot of illegitimate natty claims, and there's also a few from 1975-the BCS that are contested because apparently boomers were too dumb to realize putting the top 2 teams against each other made a lot more sense than having the number 1 ranked team play the 7th ranked team because of an overrated bowl game's conference tie ins.

Here are your real national champions from 1936-1997

1936- Minnesota
1937- Pitt
1938- Tennessee and TCU both have a legit claim, I'll stick with the AP and go with TCU
1939- Texas A&M
1940- Minnesota
1941- Minnesota LOL @ Bama's claim
1942- Ohio State and Georgia both have legit claims, Georgia won the Rose Bowl, and beat top 5 GA Tech, OSU didn't go bowling and I'm biased, so it goes to Georgia
1943- Purdue- Notre Dame lost to something called Great Lakes Navy
1944- Ohio State, but I wouldn't argue too much if someone said Army
1945- Army
1946- Georgia. Only unbeaten and untied team in the country. Notre Dame bias won't fly here
1947- Michigan
1948- Michigan
1949- Notre Dame
1950- Give Bear Bryant another trophy, because this one goes to Kentucky. Same record as Oklahoma, beat em head to head
1951- Maryland, they were undefeated and beat the AP pick in Tennessee
1952- Georgia Tech, they played more games and a tougher schedule than Michigan State
1953- Notre Dame, I'd listen to an argument for Oklahoma, but the AP champ, Maryland has no case
1954- Ohio State, played a much tougher schedule than UCLA
1955- Oklahoma
1956- Oklahoma
1957- Auburn
1958- LSU
1959- Syracuse
1960- Washington- Ole Miss played one of the weakest schedules for any claiming team ever, Minnesota lost two games, including to Washington, Missouri lost to Kansas, but Kansas forfeited, but I'm still counting it
1961- Alabama
1962- USC, Ole Miss went undefeated, but played a far weaker schedule
1963- Texas
1964- Arkansas, Bama swept the polls, but lost to Texas in their bowl game, Arky went undefeated.
1965- Alabama, Michigan State lost their bowl
1966- Alabama, they were unbeaten and untied, shocked they don't claim this one as it's legit
1967- USC
1968- Ohio State
1969- Texas
1970- Nebraska, Ohio State and Texas should be ashamed of themselves for claiming it
1971- Nebraska
1972- USC
1973- Notre Dame- they beat Bama in their bowl game
1974- Oklahoma
1975- Oklahoma
1976- Pitt
1977- Notre Dame
1978- USC, same record as Bama, beat em head to head
1979- Alabama
1980- Georgia
1981- Clemson
1982- Penn State
1983- Auburn, Miami was blown out by Florida. Auburn beat Florida.
1984- BYU
1985- Oklahoma
1986- Penn State
1987- Miami
1988- Notre Dame
1989- Miami
1990- Georgia Tech, Colorado was probably a better team, but had the fifth down not happened, they were a 2 loss team, this shouldn't be split
1991- Washington, Miami has a legit claim, but Washington played a tougher schedule, took a whole lot of derp for this not to be a bowl game
1992- Alabama
1993- Florida State
1994- Nebraska, but I wouldn't argue too much with anyone that said Penn State, another big time derp for this not to be a bowl game
1995- Nebraska
1996- Florida
1997- Nebraska, come on now

1970- Nebraska, Ohio State and Texas should be ashamed of themselves for claiming it

I won't argue too much about that one. Both teams claim it, both are legit claims IMO, and WW2 era natties are a little wonky anyways. We were fucked in 46 though.

It’s not like Bowls were better then, when they didn’t count.

This is dumb.
Bowl games were nothing buy exhibition games back then, just like most now.

Just because they lost the Bowl game while being undefeated in the regular season, means nothing.
The Bowl game meant little then, and to try and rationalize it now is just retarded.

Thanks.

Gators cotton bowl loss doesn't count. Got it.

1991-Miami for sure was the best team and only one that can lay claim to it.

They counted on the record, the AP changed because of their fuckup in 65. Exhibition games don't count on the record, and then you have the cases of two teams with an undefeated regular season where one won their bowl game, the other lost. And according to your logic, any of your Sooner brothers that ever bragged about their Sugar Bowl win of Bama is retarded, and Bama's "didn't want to be their" excuse was valid, and Bama should have ended the year ranked higher than Oklahoma.

If it weren't for 1950, you wouldn't have this opinion, and caring so much about a 70 year old natty is quite frankly pathetic.

Well since people in charge back then were retarded and they didn't play each other, all we have to go on is resume.

Had it not been for an actual miracle against Missouri, Nebraska wouldn't have even been undefeated that year. Mizzou was a 7-5 team that year.

But they didn’t lose and would have been favored against Michigan, and Michigan being in a conference that prevented the matchup from happening really hurts their case

I'd argue Nebraska being in the weakest conference, needing a miracle to come out of their weak conference on top, hurts their case.

uh, Nebraska finished with two more ranked victories that season than Michigan did.

the "tougher schedule" narrative that you are trying to push is blatantly false.
