Cowboys Did What?

Was he underperforming? Don't follow the Cowboys close enough but I do remember when he got healthy after they took a chance drafting that he was playing pretty well

In short, yes.

It's a surprising move because the Cowboys gave him big money recently. Game in and game out he would miss his assignments and leave a wide open running lane.

Stuff like this happened all the time with him

There's a mile of stuff on the webs about him today.
Missing punt block by 10 yards all stretched out
Taking credit for other team mate's accomplishments
Celebrating himself at the wrong times

Coming back from injury to have a good 2018 season was a great story. He's been bad to very bad since then. I mean you can go game by game and find shots of him completely blowing assignments. It's a regular thing.

Dude was pretty good when they had Sean Lee back there calling all the shots and cleaning up. Freed Jaylon up to play aggressively. Once the responsibility fell to him, he just couldn't hack it.

Yep. Every year I catch the Cowboys a couple of times per season, and almost every time I've watched them, he would have at least 2-3 plays a game (that I would notice) where he would completely take himself out of the play, dude has absolutely no instinct out there. And he cant cover backs/tight ends to save his life, like, one of the worst in the league

I like the guy and he will probably retire by at latest end of next season and move into either a college coaching role or a broadcast role. But he plays to not get hurt now. Even when he has to go to coverage you can see that his speed isn't there, he has a limp as he is trying to accelerate. Since he can't play special teams, there isn't much room for him.

On GB he is going to be exposed since there won't be a Lee/LVE/Parsons to help clean up his mess.

Maybe yes, maybe no. He will be playing in a different scheme than he did in Dallas but his play has declined since 2019 so this season will answer that.

It may be a case of motivation.

By his second game, so give him 40 defensive snaps, and the GB fans will be saying "I get it, Dallas!"

flotsam and jetsam good riddance

This seems to be a rather common sentiment, BUT... I think it would be quite entertaining if the Packers and Cowboys meet in the playoffs and Jaylon Smith absolutely wrecks the Boys in that game - all while the Jerry is the one paying him to do it.

It's too early to call Smith a liability. Maybe he just needed a change of scenery.
