Cowboys Fire DC Nolan, DL Coach Tomsula

Losing Dak is what hurt our offense.
The first few weeks we had zero intelligent offensive playcalling. It wasn't until we were in scramble mode and Dak was running things in the 4th quarter hurryup that we had any semblance of an offense.

Reports this morning that Dan Quinn is in discussions to be the new DC.

A depleted OL didn't help.

Never a big fan of Quinn. I see Quinn in the same light as Nolan. DCs who presided over great defenses because those defenses had all world talent but really didn't do well without that talent. Quinn was DC in Seattle when they had one of the most talented defenses in league history coordinating a defense that designed by Pete Carroll. He might be better than Nolan but then again he might not. If I was a fan I would want to be looking elsewhere

Who would be a better choice?

Idk. There are alot of coaches out there. It doesn't have to be a current DC. Someone can be promoted. Look at the 49ers DC. Almost nobody knew who he was when the 49ers hired him as a linebacker coach promoted to DC and now he is considered one of the hot head coaching prospects this offseason. The 49ers could have ended up with Quinn this offseason. I'll accept it but can't say I would be that thrilled about it either.

Patricia
Dan Quinn
Marvin Lewis

100% it will be one of those three. Unless Zimmer is shown the door (unlikely) then it would be Zimmer for sure.
I think it's Quinn.

All of a sudden since Quinn then Richard left, SEA can't draft or play defense. Not sure it was Pete.

hiring no name cooridinators is a young-coaches game, not someone like McCarthy. Guys like Mike are retreads who need to hire retread coaches who he either owes a favor or is trying to win now. Shanahan isn't that guy, he is willing to take chances because he has a long career and if he had failed in the NFL then NCAA is always an option. McCarthy needs to win now or he is done in football.

you make me sad!

haha. Just gotta be realistic. Jerry wasn't interested in some young upstart coach who could be here for 20 years, so he got an old spare coach who might have a chance of bringing in a band of mercenary coaches to steal a SB before jerry kicks the can. Afraid it is just going to get crazier and crazier the next few years. Wouldnt' be surprised at all if Dak played on another franchise tag and then was let walk if he doesn't win it all next year. Then Jerry will try to get Big Ben, Brees, or Brady to come play for him.

Drafting is another issue. Pete Carroll designed and implemented that defense which just like the 49ers defense at that time was a pretty simple and straightforward defense the goal of which was to minimize mistakes. When Quinn was there he oversaw one of the most talented defenses in league history. I don't think his defenses in Atlanta were much overall. I see someone quite similar to Nolan. Nolan oversaw a really good defense in Baltimore because of the talent that was there. But when he got to SF his defense underperformed and was not good and he has failed stops all over the NFL. Quinn doesn't have same long failed resume as a DC so maybe he works out.

The key is going to be if there is an offseason program or not. hard to bring in new staff and players and then turn around and figure out how it all fits in live games, or a zoom call. Not saying that is the only reason Nolan failed, but didn't help.

Have there been in stats or anything by a group like The Athletic that shows how first year coaches, both HC and OC/DC did this year? Would be really interested to see that.
