DC Marcus Freeman new ND head coach

The interesting thing is Kelly wanted Freeman Rees snd strength coach Matt Balis. All three said no thanks.

Well I wouldn’t call what Willingham did as coaching so I guess it’s a true statement from a certain point of view

Looks like almost the entire staff is staying. Makes the transition a lot easier. We know he can recruit and put together a defense. Now it’s time to see how he handles gameday. I’m happy with the hire but agreed. Huge step up
if there is little movement in the transfer portal + most of the recruiting class stays then the expectation should be to keep things rolling. Fans will get impatient if they start off his tenure with a pair of 8-5 seasons like Brian Kelly did.

is Clark Lea the biggest loser in this? He was Notre Dame's DC last year and if he waited one more year there is a chance he'd the HC @ Notre Dame, not Vanderbilt.

Maybe but he’s Vanderbilt guy. He’s going to be their version of Pat Fitzgerald. ND really didn’t want to hire someone without HC experience. Their hand was forced a bit here. I think Freeman has the chops to do it but it’s a hard place to learn on the job.
If this were last year I doubt they call up Lea.

it is much more likely that he's going to be their version of Carl Franks. (it was really hard to come up with a reference that made sense, most of the non-Vandy small private schools have really nailed their HC hires lately. Franks coached at Duke from 1999-2003 and is a Duke alum)

if Lea was given the option, he would never pick Vanderbilt. Alma mater or not.

I am so erect right now

Good for Notre Dame

Good hire. Kelly took the money but it was Freemans program. My droider level no. 2 is USC because that has been so much fun for me and if he gets them to the playoffs when the squats go 5-7 I'm going to be beyond insufferable but I'll root for those guys on a random Saturday because he seems like a really great coach.
