Minnesota and Pittsburgh (colleges) had some pretty good teams back in the day...

if the NFL never came to those cities would they still be top notch programs?

And I Oop Oh My GIF by ScooterMagruder

No. Minnesota is a wasteland for recruiting and Pitt has shit facilities and don’t even have their own stadium, they wouldn’t be able to keep recruits in their backyard from Ohio State and Penn State if the Steelers never existed

Fred right now...

angry the office GIF

Pitt only gave up 40 or more once this past season.

Can’t fault em for that loss. They scheduled the best OOC opponent they could.

Well Minnesota is a state for one. And two, no. Pitt has had some great teams even when the Steelers existed.

The Steelers didn't hinder Pitt, they won a Natty with a Heisman winner during the 70s Steelers run. Having to compete with Penn State/WVU/Ohio State, AND two high-level pro teams (not counting the fucking Pirates) AND having facilities/their stadium way off campus is what hinders Pitt.

Also not to mention most of Pitt's dominance came in the 20s and 30s when there were far fewer teams and playing a host of teams that don't do FBS. They were just an early adopter.

Most of Minnesota's 7 National Championships came from Bernie Bierman, head coach from 1932 - 1950.
He had 5 during that time.

He had a Quarterback that went 28-1 in 3 years for Back to Back to Back National Championships in 1933-1934-1935.

That Quarterback ????

Yep

This is where we need Fred telling us that Oklahoma would have never been anything if not for Minnesota in 20000 word essay form

And if Minnesota had hired Bud Wilkinson like they should have, they could have gone 47 straight. That would chap his ass.

i dont get why there would be a correlation

I don't see the NFL teams affecting these programs. Minnesota has been pretty competitive in the last few years. My contention is that any D-1 college program that does not have its own dedicated field isn't going to be very good...hence Pitt
