The rumor I was always told in the military is that the Vikings didn't want people going to "Iceland" so they named it something that wouldn't appeal to them. "Greenland" was named much the same. It was to throw explorers off.
I don't know how factual that is.
 
Iceland was discovered first. The people who discovered it noticed it has a shitload of ice, so they named it as such. Then no one wanted to move there. Then they discovered Greenland and were like, "holy shit! This place has more ice than Iceland, but no one will come if we call it 'Icierland'."

The northern-most part of the US mainland is apparently in MN. Some hole-in-the-wall called Angle Inlet.

So it’s not Maine then. I thought wrong.
