That's how we always cleaned our grills at Village Inn when I cooked there in high school.

Still do it on my flat-top here, but just run cold water with a brush on hot cast iron pans after wiping any grease out with a paper towel.
 
I use a similar trick on nasty pans. Little bit of water on hot burner and it loosens it up as well.


Mom taught me that 40 yrs ago.
