Directing: Best 3 in a Row?

Nah. Weird Science is the best on the list actually.
If I had to choose: Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ferris.
It’s the lesser of the three for me, but not by much. And I presumed that wouldn’t be common opinion but looking at IMDB Weird Science comes in at 6.6, the other two 7.8.

I would say that’s the three for Hughes.

I had to go back as I thought I posted this one. This is the best three in a row to me for Kubrick.

Shining and Full Metal Jacket are solid, I just can’t put Eyes Wide Shut into it and call it his best three in a row.

Agree. Except I don’t even think the Shining or FMJ are as good as the other three either. A Clock Work Orange is a way better book adaptation than the Shining in my opinion. I think the Shining is good on its own, but compared to the book it doesn’t hold up. FMJ is great. But compared to other similar movies of the time, like Apocalypse Now, I don’t think it really stands out.

FMJ just stands our for me solely on the first 45 minutes at Parris Island. My father went in at roughly the exact same time in the movie and was blown away how accurate setting and everything was (minus the Pyle character he didn’t have come across. Lol).

Clockwork is the weak one to me out of the three in a row I picked. But it’s less of a weak on the EWS.

You make a great point….it was the better adaption of the book than the Shining. It’s just not the better movie to me. Probably because….Jack.

Strangelove and 2001 are unimpeachable to me…..making it easy to pick those three as the best three movie Kubrick run. You could even tack EWS at the end of those two and I would still pick them.

To me The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut are his two best movies.

I'd probably rank them all as:

1. The Shining
2. Eyes Wide Shut
3. 2001: A Space Odyssey
4. Full Metal Jacket
5. Barry Lyndon
6. A Clockwork Orange
7. Dr. Strangelove

You got Dr Strangelove at the bottom? Yikes.

Spielberg is not credited as the director for Poltergeist.

Yes, I know what the internet says on the topic.

LOTR movies are barely a step above the Hobbit movies and the Star Wars prequels.
Peter Jackson is a horrible director.
Those movies are trash that nerds just desperately *want to* love.

Honestly, my main gripe is every single LotR movie being, at minimum, 3 hrs long.

It’s actually pretty hard not to fall asleep in the middle of some LotR. lol

Oh damn. Nice.

I was wracking my brain to try to think of other Directors to look into and never thought of Landis. Thats a really good three.

we’ve talked about some really great directors who have had a number of great films but hard to get 3 in a row. With that in mind, check out this streak of consecutive films by James Cameron.

The Terminator (1984)
Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)
Aliens (1986)
The Abyss (1989)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Point Break (1991)
Last Action Hero (1993)
True Lies (1994)

While all of these are not “great” they are all solid IMO and I’d match the first 3 against any list here. Also, this list doesn’t even include his two biggest movies (Titanic and Avatar).

Some might say that he raised the bar  :noidea:

John Landis

Spies Like Us
¡Three Amigos!
Coming To America

🏆
Animal House
Blues Brothers
An American Werewolf in London

?

Seems the obvious three to me.

Also, Landis is one of those who whenever you give him credit (which is due) there should also be a noting of what an incredible piece of shit he is with it.
