Do watches still serve a purpose?

You don't seem qualified to make that decision.
I find it interesting when someone starts a thread asking if watches are still a thing and then disagrees when someone doesn't say what they want them to say.

I like wearing a watch and so do a lot of people.

so, yes, they still serve a purpose.

I hate carrying a phone.

So I need my watch. I want my watch.

I rarely see anyone under 30 wearing a watch and if they are, it's a smart watch. I personally enjoy the look of one and feel amiss if I don't have one on.

While teaching, I keep my phone in my pocket or at my desk. If I'd expect the attention of my students, I feel they deserve the respect of me staying off of my phone (do not disturb) as well. Only a call from my emergency contacts will come through. Therefore, I use a watch to help keep track of time in which I provide for short "brain" breaks a couple times during the class. These allow for a quick bathroom break, drink of water, or to check on notifications for students and myself.

I did pick up a smart watch about a year ago that has become my go-to recently, as you can probably tell the other watches in the picture haven't been set in some time. I can glance at a notification if it comes through, but I bought it primarily because I was wearing both a watch and a fitness tracker previously on separate wrists and I just didn't like the "look" of that.

The Fossil Gen 5 and my two Citizen Eco Drive watches share the same band sizes, so I can switch the straps depending on the look i want. The other wooden watch you can see in the picture was given to me as a gift and gets used rarely.
